Re: Torrified wheat

I use it for head retention in a lot of my brews, but I don't worry too much if I have none. Did I read somewhere recently that you could substitute shredded wheat for it (other cereals are available), or did I dream that? Shredded wheat used to be used by home brewers quite a lot years ago. I've n...

Re: AG#31 - Honey Ale

Hope it turns out well! Do you need to boil the honey to sterilise it? Or is it OK as is? I did a honey ale last year, or was it the year before :-k . I added my honey at the start of fermentation, though Monkeybrew's timing sounds about right. I pasteurised the honey by mixing it with a minimal am...

Re: Should chilling begin at 'final gravity'?

Thanks for the replies. As Jim has said, the gravity will continue to drop while the beer is in the keg. There's still yeast in it and plenty of slow fermenting sugars to give it condition. I gave up priming my beers years ago, having discovered a few days in the keg gives plenty of time for the be...

Re: Should chilling begin at 'final gravity'?

It also depends on whether you are kegging/casking or bottling. I usually aim to cool and keg a couple of degrees above FG and allow the beer to drop the last couple of degrees in the keg to carbonate. But as Jim says you can't predict FG with absolute accuracy at the HB level, but you can vent the ...

Re: Recovering yeast for my next batch?

Yes you should still get some decent yeast at this point but I would probably want to make a stater from it to make sure I had enough vigorous cells. If you do store it for a little while I would look at at a two step starter. Say 500ml followed by 2 litres, but it would depend on how long after ha...

If you are about to brew a beer you hope to drink in two weeks time forget it.

Re: Grainfather first brew - bit of a disaster

After switching from a 3 vessel system to the grainfather I only have one criticism. That filter. I use a hop spider but still have issues with the filter blocking. It would be the only reason why I would sell my gf. The wort doesn’t seem as clear as it did with the 3v system either I couldn't agre...

Re: Grainfather first brew - bit of a disaster

Curious Dave. Do you calculate the figure manually using the formula in the ibstructions or do you use the figure the app gives you? If I use their figure for Sparge water, I will always be 2.5-3L short at the end. 0.8 as a grain retention figure is plainly wrong. Sent from my Mi A1 using Tapatalk ...

Re: Grainfather first brew - bit of a disaster

A few answers to your questions. The sparge i find does take a while, half hour seems about right. I just do 2 litres at a time using the controller to log the amount of sparge water going in. I also just use cold water to sparge with. I find i hit all my targets and efficiency is good. I see no re...

Re: Grainfather first brew - bit of a disaster

Hello I am a BIABer who decided to get a Grainfather. It arrived last week and I had my first brew a couple of days ago. Basically it was a bit of a disaster. Having watched a load of youtube vids I thought it would be ideal ie could use it in the kitchen, would be easier to clean and manage than t...

Re: Grainfather requiring andriod testers

I wonder if they are going to change the grain absorbtion settings to allow you to set your own. This is in my opinion is the main change they need to do :) I emailed them a bit back but they wasnt really that clear if this would be a future option. I've mentioned this to them several times and fee...

Brewbuilder only seem to offer metal pots though. I can't find anything about getting one made.
He will make them, don't know why they're not on the site anymore. Send him an email. Failing that, the Malt Miller also does them.

Re: Grainfather pump

I didn't get an answer to my question, so I'll just mention that all oxi cleaners are not equal. Some create much more gas and bubbling (and at lower temperatures) than others. I don't have a grainfather, but the pump arrangement on my kettle is a very similar layout. When pushing cleaner through t...
