Re: Band-Aid Smell

Thanks all for your feedback. I was also unsure if the high sparge temperature alone was enough to cause the off flavour, but its a recipe I have brewed before, in the same vessels and with the same procedure, so it was all I could pinpoint. I use starsan as a steriliser, and I've had no problems u...

Re: Avoiding foaming from corny tap

I'm not very fond of having great coils of beer line in my beer fridge, nor of depressurising and repressurising my cornies whenever I draw a pint. Just wondering if there any other ways of reducing the pressure at the tap to stop the foam? Some sort of counter-pressure mechanism, or expanding cham...

Re: BM and efficiency

Danwix said Does anyone do anything different or have any tips on improving sparging?[/quote] Lift the malt tube onto the stirrup. LEAVE THE TWO TOP FILTERS IN PLACE and then very slowly pour your sparge liquor evenly over the filters ( 6 litres ). When you have finished the sparge DO NOT remove the...

Re: Wanted - A slightly sweeter stout recipe

As the title suggests, I'm after a recipe for a stout that's not quite as strong as an Imperial Stout, but maybe up around the 6 or 7 percent mark. I want it a shade sweeter than normal, but I don't yet know how to engineer that variable into the recipe. Any help welcome. :) How about Graham Wheele...

Re: Braumeister timer not stopping at the end of a mash step

I have been using my Braumeister 20L 2015 model for about 9 months successfully. Today whilst mashing - the timer does not stop at the end of a mash step but continues. My step profile was 20mins at 63 degrees followed by 35mins at 73 degrees. At the end of the 63 degrees the screen went on to the ...

Re: Ashbeck water

I thought starsan kill all things except brewing yeast if not whats the point of sanitising if the surface is still contaminated Wild yeasts will be quickly crowded out by the pitch of healthy brewers yeast so aren't per say such an issue. Bacterial infections however, multiply much more quickly so...

Re: Bottling directly from fermenter

Here we go again :!: Two buckets two taps one length of silicone hose and a Little Bottler. Job done! . This is the same procedure I follow. Bottling is much less messy, and far quicker than priming each bottle separately. Priming sugar boiled with a bit of water and added to the bottling bucket, t...

Re: Hop poles and planning permission

Well I've just checked- you don't need planning permission to erect a flag pole to fly the United Flag (it's only the Union Jack on a boat). And you don't need PP to erect a flag pole in your grounds unless you're in a controlled area. And sometimes wild hops do grow up the wire stays stabilising t...

Re: Starting with beer

So, as a complete novice, you might expect that I'm going to ask some pretty stupid questions. So here goes:- Is there anything stopping you from starting the whole brewing process with beer instead of water? You make you first batch of lovely cleared bright beer (with yeasts and stuff removed by c...
