Alkalinity test before.
Use acid that was bought years ago and has sat in the shed.
Alkalinity test after.
Double thumbs up, brew on.

Re: SS Brewmaster bucket
Get hold of some Bar Keeper's Friend make a paste, apply, then buff off with a clean cloth then leave in open air, no lid. Here's an extract from the cleaning instructions on the SS Brewtech site. It seems Bar Keeper's friend is not entirely a good thing. Apply with caution! "NEVER USE Oxalic Acid ...

Re: Strange pH readings in mash
With reference to the condom simile.
Are we saying all damage is done in the first ten minutes with an incorrect pH. Focusing mainly on tannin extraction and precipitating proteins?
Can it not be regained?

Re: Strange pH readings in mash
I did a brew yesterday and saw some really strange things happening with my mash pH that I'm hoping someone can explain. I prepared a batch of brewing water and treated it with phosphoric acid to bring the pH down to 5.6. I then mashed in with around half of it and a grain bill that was 100% maris ...

Re: How can this be possible?
The only time I have made a wort that fermentable was when I did over night mashes.
Otherwise the only other thing I can think of is an error, a very punchy yeast or maybe an infection.

Re: St Austell 'Proper Job'
Anyone got an update on this recipe? I have been impressed by this bottle conditioned beer.
Time to fire up the boiler and try and recreate this beauty.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Hop Storage
Split them in to manageable and usable sizes depending on brewlength and hop usage, vacuum pack them. Then stick them in the freezer. Make sure the labeling is robust and has type, year and AA% on them.

Re: Windsor Yeast.... Brilliant
Recipe looks ideal, not to heavy on crystals. Only advice I have is mentioned above. Just leave for three weeks in the FV, with the last few days as crash cooling.Bazz wrote:

Thanks.
Had a bottle last night, really makes a good traditional tasty pint.
Good luck.

Guinness Rye Pale Ale Yeast?
Is that a bottle conditioned yeasty sediment in the new Guinness Rye Pale Ale? Round the relatives so can't really test it out properly.
If so... Has the legendary yeast returned?

It must take an age to deal with anything darker than an ESB.
I think I like this yeast for it's low attenuation. After all, unlike commercial brewers, I am after flavours, not abv. Ideal for a pale mild beer or a weak bitter, where it needs to drink stronger.
