making a starter
im making a25L lager at the weekend and beersmith says i need 414.0 billion cells, the date on my yeast WLP830 is June 14 2014 so i would need to make a 3L starter on a stir plate to make 494.7 billion cells am i right in saying i would put the vial straight in 3L of malt and i don't need to step up...

Dave's right about the enzymatic malt and no black. I posted the grain bill list from the Hook Norton Brewery tour I went on last year HERE Well that's very interesting Jim. No flaked maize or even crystal, and if HN don't know, who the f**k does? BTW I'm glad to hear that someone else's wife hates...

i think something like that is the answer ive just got the brew on now i will give that a gowilfh wrote:How about substituting the sugar and maize for pale and crystal to get back to the target og. Say 50:50 of the extra malt.
That would give you more malt flavour.

I have been brewing the old hooky recipe from GWs book for a while now and all though the book says its in the style of the beer it doesn't quite taste as the real beer does, i seem to get quite a big crystal malt hit from old hooky but not from GWs version. my question is how much would you increas...

same as above i did this today transferd to a 25 liter container flushed the head space with co2 and in the fridge for 6 weeks and then poured another pilsner on top of the yeast cake ready to go again

Just so i have got this correct you have to unscrew the spear to get it out and there is no clip to remove or put back on like a normal sanke keg
if this is so i would be very interested in the 20 liter versions of these .

I love brewing lager. Was never really a lager drinker until I started brewing my own; always favoured ales. It is a long drawn out process but so worth it IMHO. I usually use WLP 800 liquid yeast stepped up several time to get a gallon starter for a 10 gallon batch of pilsner style lager. I fermen...

bloody hell that is bad are you sure your starting with water out of the tap and not battery acid lolIt's not really just a slight off flavour though. It's more like someone has put AIDs in your mouth.
