Re: Liquid yeast viability.

Hello, Resurrecting this post as I have a very similar question. I have some liquid yeast manufactured in January (Imperial yeast, so theoretically they are double packs as they apparently start at 200 billion cells). I won't be able to brew with these until at least August maybe even September, so...

Re: Which Hydrometer?

I've got a Stevenson Read SC2748/00 The scale goes from 1000 to 1060. The means the gradations are further apart than most hydrometers that cover a wider range, making it easy to read. I only use it for FG readings, I have a refractometer for OG so it doesn't matter if I make a strong beer with a st...

There's an easy to use calculator on Brewer's Friend, you enter the SG and OG .

Re: Hydrometer? Refractometer? Or something better?

… I use a refractometer before fermentation and a hydrometer once fermentation is underway Double the trouble! I've described why I don't want to use (can't use?) either of those instruments, and suggested what I might think of anyone suggesting those instruments are the ones to use. But I suppose ...

Re: Hydrometer? Refractometer? Or something better?

"should I put the sample back and risk cross-infection, or should I ditch it?". The answer is to take a sip, for QA purposes, then pour it back. A Pycnometer. NOTE: Often pronounced "pick-nom-eater", but as it's derived from the Greek word for "dense" ("πυκνός") I'd prefer "puk-nom-eater". Shouldn'...

Re: any electrical wizzes? temperature controller query

so how come you need to unplug - doesn't the controller turn on the heater when it's needed and therefore turn off the cooling? and vice versa or if you leave both in are they in constant battle i.e heater on but low and fridge on max trying to cool it down to required temp Most of the time the roo...

Re: Shortage of malt?

I was speaking to BrewUK today. I was told there is no shortage of malt. In fact, as the big breweries cut back on production because pubs are selling less they expect there to be a glut of malt and prices will drop.

Re: Double stir plate project

Looks great. It's images like this that sometimes make me wish I wasn't a bodger. For the moment, I'll stick to my built-from-scrap stir plate - phone charger connected by bent paper clips to a computer fan with a magnet from an old hard drive stuck on it. Tell a lie, I did spend £4.16 on a Zalman ...

Re: Greg hughs single hop grain bill

Assume this is for 23L at a typical HB efficiency, but can you confirm? OG, brew length, etc. I can then apply my preferred brewing software/calculator. I have some hops I want to use in a single hop ale. Was thinking of a SMASH, but this would also work well. TIA It's for 23litres OG is 1050, expe...
