The 'C' Word

Do you have a 'go to' Christmas beer recipe? Do you go for something light and drinkable? A warming stout? A strong Belgian with loads of cinnamon, ginger and orange peel added? Please add your recipes below, I need some inspiration. I know no-one really wants to think about it yet but these things ...

Re: Re-using yeast: floculation issue

My beers do not need gelatine fining; whether or not the gelatine remains in the beer or not doesn't matter, its inclusion in the manufacturing process makes the beer non-vegan friendly. Spot on, JonB. My beers are always clear, and I can pour the entire bottle into a glass without any yeast or haz...

Re: not using sugar in wine making

Has anyone got experience of making wines from fruits like blackberrys without adding table sugar. The sugar will fully ferment out so drying out the wine too much and I don't personally like that taste it leaves aswell. Its coming up to that time of year when hedgerow fruits will be available and ...

Confused! Why does it say 'cider' on the bottles? Is it already fermented? I thought you made your own.

I think in the US cider = apple juice and hard cider = cider

Re: The mysterious case of the diminishing sugar level…..

Hops don't absorb sugar, so adding a kettle of water is adding to the volume and reducing the SG ie watering it down

Re: No Chill

BigEars, could it be that your expectations are far too high? I've made beers in the past that have turned out nothing like what I set out to brew, but they have always been drinkable. Some have even been a bit boring and lacking in something, but they still got finished, and the recipe got tweaked ...

Re: Gelatin

I believe gelatin is made by boiling up the hooves. Yum. :out As well as collegen from skin, ligaments and bones. Double yum! It always amazes me that, in striving for 'perfection', some brewers seem to think the best course of action is to dump this c**p in there! Each to their own, of course! :wi...

Is it unreasonable to expect clean bottles back?
I don't think it's unreasonable at all. I have a simple solution to this - dirty bottles = no more beer for you!

However, I think you have factor in the fact that we make more beer than we would otherwise buy, because we drink more than we would and perhaps give it away.
I agree, I wouldn't drink half as much (or even a quarter as much) if I had to buy beer all the time!

Re: Elecricity costs

I agree with the sentiment about enjoying it, but I'm pretty sure if I factor in the cost of all the gear I've bougt over the past few years, I'd probably still be better off buying beer...even the expensive stuff from the local bottle shop! Fair point, Cobnut! Though the smug satisfaction of drink...

Re: Elecricity costs

It's so hard to estimate as it depends on a lot of variables. Also, if you use a heater/cooler for fermentation/priming/serving, the cost goes up. The heating of cleaning/rinsing water is another factor...... Step up to all grain, make better beer for less than you can buy it for, have fun, enjoy th...
