Re: Who is up for a Super Baumeister then...

I hope the new units have better taps as mine drips when cold. If I was fermenting in the BM I’d loose half the brew! Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Email Speidel, I had the same issue when I bought mine and they sent me a new part; it was just the plastic insert bit and was a sod to get the old ...

Re: BM BACBrewing yield increase disc (new version) help needed

I was intending replacing my mesh filters with Bac Brewing ones as I’m fed up stabbing my fingers but might go for this instead. I guess it would prevent wort fountains too. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk I'm quite happy to recommend a BacBrewing yield increase disc regardless, but I've found the...

Re: Corny and co2 in fridge?

I’ve got 2 cornies and a 1.5kg co2 bottle in my fridge and it’s always been fine.
Some say it can cause problems with the regulator (I assume condensation) but I’ve never had a problem.

Re: Honey Brew?

I made Barney’s honey mild once. I racked onto 450g of honey (dissolved in a little warm water) after 4 days of fermentation. I can’t remember how strong the honey taste was but I do know that it kept fermenting for weeks after kegging into a plastic pressure barrel. I had fitted a pressure gauge to...

Re: has the single pot killed the three pot systems

I think there are a lot of home brewers out there that still use the 3 vessel system setup, they are still very popular, and at the end of the day it is whatever you are happy with using  My 3 vessel system made great beer but it was a lot of kit to store somewhere. Also, mucking about wit...

Re: has the single pot killed the three pot systems

The GF types are two pots one inside the other it's very space efficient but if you use a pot to heat sparge water you right back to three pots. Aamcle You don’t actually need to sparge though. I use a Braumeister and I just heat a saucepan of water to give the grains a final rinse but many don’t e...

Re: has the single pot killed the three pot systems

Might be worth looking out for an early used Grainfather or Braumeister on eBay. They do come up from time to time. If you are not keen on programming timers etc. they can both be used manually.

Dark Ale

I never got around to ordering oak chips and, with the pressure of Christmas looming, I ended up making a batch of Sarah Hughes Dark Ruby Mild and a batch of Old Peculier. The OP was kegged yesterday and seems very smooth from an Initial taste. I put half a tin of black treacle in as usual. It was f...

Re: Dark Ale

Thanks PeeBee, that’s very helpful. All the brews I’m considering are fairly similar but I’ll have a go at yours this time. Incidentally, I’ve made Old Peculiar a few times with reasonable success but never done a side by side taste test with the original. I normally use half a tin of treacle (225g)...

Re: Dark Ale

You could just make your OP or OCH clone and add the chips when it hits terminal gravity? Keep sampling until the oak character is where you want it? Thanks, I was wondering about this. I’m now thinking about brewing either OP or Sarah Hughes Dark Ruby Mild so I’ll try what you suggest. Sent from m...

Dark Ale

Hi All,

I fancy making a nice winter warmer. Preferably something along the lines of Old Crafty Hen or Old Peculiar (which I’ve made before with success) but with rum or whiskey barrel oak chips.

Anybody recommend a good recipe?

Re: Digital refractometer problems

I found the scale on my hydrometer quite difficult to read so bought a refractometer for brew day and a finishing hydrometer for the end of fermentation.
