Which malt are you using, nigebeer?
There seem to be a small number of us on here who are having problems with huge amounts of trub using the latest batch of Crisp malt.

Re: The trub from hell!
Hi Piscator. Thanks for getting back to me. Everything you say is correct. My confusion is this was my 76th all grain brew and this has never happened before. No major changes apart from using the Crisp pale malt. I've just pulled a third glass of trub out of the fermenter. The beer's beginning to s...

The trub from hell!
Earlier today I brewed a standard 1.050 bitter. Pale malt 95%, crystal malt 5%. The pale malt was from the Malt Miller--Crisp malt. A new sack which I bought because the Fawcett's I normally buy wasn't in stock. The wort didn't run clear from the mash tun at any point during the sparge. The 7 1/2 ga...

Re: White stuff on my SS FV
It would be good to know if other people with stainless steel fermenters have this same issue or if it's only with the SS Brewtech ones.
I'm going to give mine a good wipe round today with some sodium percarbonate solution in advance of a brewday tomorrow.

Re: White stuff on my SS FV
Thanks for the replies. Lord Groan;- The fermenter is cleaned off with cold water after use and no other cleaning agent. I try to dry it as best I can with kitchen towel, but can't get it completely dry. Our water is moderately hard, but this problem doesn't happen with my stainless steel boiler, wh...

White stuff on my SS FV
I'm now using a stainless steel fermenter. A definite improvement over the old plastic bucket. After cleaning it out white powdery stuff appears on the inside when it dries out. I can see it and feel it when I rub my fingers over it. It's very slightly gritty. Before using the FV I wipe the white st...

Re: Pump power supply
I don't bother with a speed controller, I just go pedal to the metal every time I use it ;) I batch sparge though - life's too short for fly sparging  Too short?! Takes me 25 minutes to fly sparge 7 gallons of wort into the boiler. Since when is batch sparging faster? Plus with fly sparging yo...

Thanks for the heads up, Grumpydev. Just ordered myself one of these Buffalo elements as a spare.

How do you clean a pump out?
Hi all. I'm thinking of buying a chugger pump or similar to power my rotating sparge arm then, at the end of the brewday, pump the wort into my FV after cooling it. For the sparge arm the pump will only be pushing hot liquor, so no problem. To pump wort into my FV, though, I'll want to ensure it's p...

Re: Inadequate boil = excess proteins?
???? When I use Mangrove Jack it shows a light head on the wort in about 12 hours.daf wrote:
I'll see how it goes, I ptched the yeast yesterday, but it's Mangrove Jack and that always takes a good 36 hours to start fermenting properly.
What temperature do you pitch at?

Re: Inadequate boil = excess proteins?
Sorry to sort of hijack this thread, but the evaporation rate figures quoted above have got me worried. My wort boils for 90 minutes with a loss of about 20% volume. Is this a bad thing? Should I try to calm the boil down? Guy What problems are you having with your beer? The beer I make is very dri...

Re: Fly sparging question
Thanks for the info gents. Much appreciated. One thing that still isn't clear, regarding the sprinkling arms, what's the point? If the grain bed is covered with an inch of water then the sprinkling will have no effect whatsoever. You could just gently let water into the mash bin down the inside wal...

Re: Fly sparging question
Fly sparging has been my method of choice for more years than I care to remember! I use a sparge arm from Hop and Grape over my coolbox mash tun. The HLT is about 1/2 meter above the tun and the arm spins really easily. I recirculate about two litres of wort before beginning sparging, then run the l...
