Re: Probe temp probe in FV

Are you brewing at Porton Down  ..or Sellafield  ...

I wouldn't worry too much about cracking your fermenter a bit.

Re: Probe temp probe in FV

I just lift the lid a little and lower my probe into the beer  ....Cant reach the bottom though

I think the plastic probes are better for immersing into beer. The stainless ones sometimes aren't.

Re: Pump for sparging?

Hmm. That sounds good enough for me. Which particular model do you use? See pictures attached. Note however that I run mine on air. I do not think it would be feasible or cost effective to run it on CO2 (I can think of a much more useful purpose for that) My mash tun/HLT/HERMS flojet http://i...

Re: Harsh taste from corny . . . dryhopping problem?

Oggy, what sort of hopping schedule did you use with the Nelson? I did a single hop beer with them and it turned out very nice Garth, recipe below: Ingredients Amount Item Type % or IBU 4.20 kg Pale Malt, Maris Otter (3.0 SRM) Grain 93.33 % 0.30 kg Wheat, Torrified (1.7 SRM) Grain 6.67 % 17.00 gm N...

Re: Pump for sparging?

Problem with the flowjets is that the maximum temperature they can officially handle is 49degC - too low for this application. Well unofficially mine have pumped 66C-77C off and on for just over a year and are now pumping 66C continuously when I use my HERMS....absolutely NO problem. Occasionally r...

Re: Harsh taste from corny . . . dryhopping problem?

The harshness does diappear in time...as long as you remove the hops form the cornie. If you leave them there the astringency gets worse and to a point of no return. This seems to be a peculiarity of cascade hops, it certainly doesn't happen with EKG. Also I have noticed that if you (over) use casca...

Re: Harsh taste from corny . . . dryhopping problem?

- I used too much in the dryhop and/or cascade usually has this effect when used as a dryhop in the keg Yep...Done it twice now and it always tastes the same....Astringent :-& Bad news is...the longer you leave the hops in there....the worse it gets. I've learnt my lesson with Cascade hops....its c...

Re: Another HERMS question

Oh and if you did want to reduce the mash temp by a large margin quickly....you could always fill the HE with ice cubes and water.

Re: Another HERMS question

Graham, Andy, You are both correct about the thermal lag, but it is nowhere near as significant as you suggest. My HE is 6L heated by a 2.2kW element. I don't retune my PID and I can change my pump flowrate at any time during the mash. The PID simply switches the element on less frequently if I redu...

Re: Another HERMS question

Thanks all, Now do I make a heat exchanger out of an old 5 litre pan or do I use my HLT? I'm thinking a wide diameter 10mm coil in the lower part of the HLT. I'll then run the cooling water back to the HLT at the end of the brewday to use for cleaning. (previously didn't have a dedicate HLT). Bear ...
