Re: strike temperature
I got my mashtun, a Coleman Extreme together with all the necessary plumbing for a tenner off the 'Barnsley Brewer' (eyup John!) about six years ago. Got to be the bargain of the century, if not all-time. Anyways I mash on the high-side these days so strike temp is 75C, mash ends up at 68-69C and it...

Re: no fermenter crud?
Maybe it's down to the yeast supplied with kits? I always use Notty and find it cleans off the FV very easily. Also settles out pronto and generally behaves itself. Can't beat it,really.

I think you could be right on all three counts, oldbloke. Especially the first one - will try that next time I'm shopping for sundries.

Re: Wine from superstore "juice from concentrate"?
Capped - I might give this a go. I have never made wine before, can you give a bit more information? You make 5 gallons with 10 litres of juice - is the difference made up of water? What are the "usual cheap wine kit techniques"? Do you have a link to a decent website? Many thanks This is EXACTLY h...

Re: Wine from superstore "juice from concentrate"?
Well.... I'm not bothered about wine at the best of times but the missus likes a drop, to put it mildly. After over a year messing around with 'from concentrate' juices, I've made every combo possible and she declared every one to be good to very good. However I've stopped experimenting and settled ...

Re: Grain Storage
Under the stairs in large zip-seal bags. Excess goes in the spare room. Brewing is done in the kitchen and the FVs go anywhere in the house that's convenient. The missus doesn't bat an eyelid, not even when I'd got a 1200cc motorbike engine completely dismantled on the living room's coffee table. Sh...

Re: Digital scales
Got mine from Aldi during one of those weekly specials for next to nowt, about 5 years ago. Still going strong and more accurate than I'll ever need of them. I mean, does it really matter if the hops are out by half a gramme?? Hops, not so much, but useful for mineral additions where you could be t...

Mine does that every time, looks like dirty cotton wool balls just under the surface. It's just yeast and a sign that it's having a GOOD TIME in its new home.

Re: Dark grains
The one and only time I left the roast barley out til late in the mash, I ended up with a transparent stout which was meant to be as black as a blind cobbler's thumb. Nah, not for me.

Re: Target Hops
I think its a great bittering hop for any beer and an IPA with 60+ IBUs mainly from target was one of the best beers I have made. But it will not be a true APA with a British hop, not that thats a problem. Considering its about the cheapest hop you can buy I think its highly under rated by home bre...
