Does it matter what I use for a bittering hop?
I normally boil for 60 minutes and have used different hops for bittering as per the various recipes. It occurs to me that whilst I'm extracting the alpha acids, I'm also boiling off all the aroma and flavour - to then be added back in at 15/10/5/FO as appropriate. Does it therefore matter what I ac...

Re: Brupaks Boiler keeps cutting out!!
hi jambo,
yes that is what is on order - however I also already have their stc1000 look-alike (or is it the same item rebadged?) which I will also test to see what the control is like. I'll let you know!

Re: Building a Brew Shed
Just my 2p's worth as a time served chemical engineer who has had to commissioned a good number of carbon-bushed (amongst other) pumps... if there is one golden rule of pumping, NEVER only partially open the inlet valve on a pump, it can only end in tears! Starving a pump results in cavitation (you ...

Re: Brupaks Boiler keeps cutting out!!
I had the exact same issue as the OP - cutting out in the middle if a boil. It also happens if you just try it with water. Even if you turn the stat to simmer mode, it is only by the slightest of margins/moves that you can keep it on the boil. The safety grid/perforated disc only make matters worse ...

Re: Peco electrim boiler best bag for
Hi All, not used the Peco, but have the Brupacks version (28litres full) - it has a plastic grid over the element that stops scorching, but as the element sits in a sump, you lose the associated volume unless you virtually upend the whole thing. Must admit that I gave up in the end and found a cheap...

hot batch sparge = mash out?
greetings pop pickers! If if batch sparge my BIAB at a higher temperature (70-72?) does this equate to a mash out? I know it won't affect the first runnings, but as they are now heating in the kettle, the temp will get up quickly hence preserving the sugar profile. I seem to recall that there is an ...

Re: blanking off a spare hole
I'm removing a thermowell in order to get a good whirlpool - 100mm thermowell ruins any swirl. Apart from cooling (when I can use a hand held anyway), I'm not sure what the point of a thermowell in a kettle is? Boiling is boiling!

Re: blanking off a spare hole
Thanks for the link - looks suitably simple to what I had hoped for! The hole is actually 1/2" BSP, so it will fit perfectly.

blanking off a spare hole
Converting a combo mash tun / kettle back to a pure kettle and need to move the thermowell into the hlt. What is the normal way of blanking off the resulting 20mm hole - if there is one? Kettle is a 50 litre 40x40 stainless job from Powells.

Re: Upgrading insulation coolbox mashtun - which method?
photos will be forthcoming once the (Chinese) valve arrives and I can show the build in full glory. In the meantime, as it doesn't have any valvage at all, I will be BIAB-ing with batch sparge, so will test the temp drop then. Love the Kingspan Orlando! Yes Fil, I did post on another forum - not sur...

Re: Upgrading insulation coolbox mashtun - which method?
Cheers all - abandoned the foam idea and will give the vermiculite a go. As for the body (which is slab sided), I wrapped it in alternate layers of Mylar and bubble wrap, 6 layers total, then finished it with the original 3mm polystyrene. Nice snug fit in the 10mm gap - just got to do a drop test no...

Upgrading insulation coolbox mashtun - which method?
Hi all, Just procured a nice 32l cool box for a mash tun with the aim of upgrading the insulation. Box comes apart nicely into an inner and an outer to reveal a massive 5mm of loose polystyrene sheets on all sides and base. Gap is actually 10mm all-round, so plenty of scope for upgrading. I plan to ...
