Would appreciate a clue as to what exactly you use - gearing up to restock a lot of stuff and any saving I can make on so-called 'specialist products' would certainly help.

Re: Topping up post boil
Thanks guys - don't know I haven't thought of this myself!
Is there a limit/implications in how much is added in your experience - say up to 20%? And are you saying 'untreated' (as in Ashbeck for example) is OK??

Topping up post boil
I had to replace my gas ring a few months ago having managed to snap off the tap and unable to get a replacement part. Since then - and bearing in mind exact same replacement ring/gas/set-up, the boil has been OK but not as vigorous as previously. Whereas I could dial it back on the old ring I'm now...

Re: Beer cost
Did an 'in depth' on this last month and panned out at between £0.40 and £0.60 per 500ml bottle depending on Yeast (scavanged/dry/liquid). Included ingredients, treatment, heating/cooling, water (inc washing out etc), fermentation and bottling - only thing missing was equipment. I do save on bitteri...

Re: Sensible Mole Brewery
Nice site Col - clearly a lot of work gone into it
I'm one of 'the more the merrier' brigade and see nothing wrong in adding your own slant on the subject of trying to brew good beer.

Re: How soon to drink
Ironically, your 'radical' novice these days seems more interested in over hopping more than anything else. And maybe he's a 'kveik' fanatic too; generally clueless and at the mercy of savages. Hmmmmmm...........and your definition of ''radical' novice' and 'over hopping' is? I'm not Norwegian by t...

Re: How Much Water to Brew 500ml of Ale?
Interesting numbers - particularly 50L cooling where I use at least half as much again if not more and that includes 25L at 2C - chilled overnight in the 'brewing fridge/freezer'. Having said that I use the 1st (hot) 25L from the chiller to wash kit post brew and everything else goes in water butts ...

Re: Hazy Jane Recipe
Any thoughts on the 1g flavour hops at 10 mins?[/b] I thought it must be a typo but looking at their trial beers that haven't made it to market - and assuming (as last reported) they still trial at homebrew level (50L), there are a few which have hop additions that surely can't/couldn't have any im...

Re: Crossmyloof for hops and yeast
Great bunch of guys at CML, very good value and although the site states 2nd class delivery (in the UK) always arrives a day later. My only comment on the actual yeasts is when doing a direct comparison to a named brand - say their Five compared to Safale S0-5. Theirs finishes a little higher and do...

Re: re using yeast
The yeast is collected by scooping out about 1/2 litre of fermenting beer from the top of the FV 24-36 hours after pitching and when there is a good strong krausen. It's stored in the 'fridge, where a thin layer of yeast settles out, until needed. It's then woken up in 1 litre of malt extract at ab...

Re: What's going on?
Just thought I'd update on this one - something I tend to forget to do! Ended up at 1012 so at least 2 points off where I'd hope to have been but not terminal. Resisted the intended 100g dry hop and went for just 50g Citra at 8C for 4 days then dropped to 2C for longer than usual - 7days - for no ot...

https://protzonbeer.co.uk/comments/2016/11/02/marston-s-a-curious-rebranding The beers being re-branded are Burton Bitter, Pedigree, Old Empire and Oyster Stout. Marston’s marketing manager Lee Williams says: “In this day and age, in terms of what is happening in the market, our branding has not be...
