Re: Thermometer
Did you say you made wine in this quantity in an earlier post, MB? I'm just having trouble getting my head round everything you do! You make wine and beer, bread, pickles and kombucha. Did you once say you also make cheese? So, come on, tell us. Do you run a small (or large!) business doing all thes...

Re: Brewing in a drought!!
I am using warm vodka to extract the flavour from the hops then adding the vodka to the fermentation. Hop tea but with vodka not water. I discovered it by accident when I was blending beer. Amazing. I'm intrigued. How did you discover it 'by accident'? Which part of beer blending involves soaking h...

Re: Help with fridge - kegerator conversion
Fermentation temperature is usually around 20C. Your friend's 'fridge won't need to work very hard to maintain this during the hotter months. Just getting it to turn on and off, as Cobnut suggests, should be fine. You can probably leave the 'fridge thermostat wherever you want-it won't be calibrated...

Re: Thermometer
I am not sure if you have used one? I have for many years to great effect. They are also recommended by trading standards. Each to their own, of course. How do you use it, MB? And what is the recommendation given by trading standards? Probably for checking surface temperature of chilled meats, cook...

Re: Thermometer
That's two of us advising against an IR gun, both for the same reason.

Re: Disgusting!
Thanks again Jocky
Your suggestion makes a lot of sense now. Great explanation. Those camlocks aren't expensive so, next time I order from Malt Miller, I'll get some.

Re: Disgusting!
Thanks Jocky, but I don't really understand!
Surely it would still need PTFE tape on the threads and would still get all gunged up like before.
I'm probably just being thick, but wouldn't I still have to unscrew the fittings and remove the PTFE tape to clean it properly?

Wow! When you harvest the yeast do you just take the 'head', so to speak. Or do you use IPA's method and take some of the beer under the head as well?

Re: Something Dark for Christmas.
Thanks for the info about sparging hops. I only use cone hops, so it's worth trying. If I can work out the numbers for still getting about 23 litres in the fermenter. The thought of leaving all that sugar and flavour in the hops has never sat well with me.
Surprised you use cold liquor.

Re: Something Dark for Christmas.
Very good looking set up, Eric. Excellent overall efficiency! Using Graham's 'Beer Engine' tells me you're at about 90%. Impressive. I reckon I'm doing well if I get around 82%. Perhaps it would be worth trying a hop sparge. Do you drain your boiler completely before doing the hop sparge, or do you ...

Re: Disgusting!
Never! Bought it at least 2 years ago. Always washed it through with water at 60C after use. Obviously didn't do the job.
If I dismantle it after every brew will the PTFE tape need to be changed every time? Bit of a PITA if it does.

Disgusting!
This morning I decided to pull my inline Kegland in line thermometer apart and replace the PTFE tape as there was a bit of a leak. Oh dear--this is what greeted me. Truly horrible. The bits are sitting in Sodium Percarbonate now. Guy Kegland thermometer 3.jpg Kegland thermometer 2.jpg Kegland thermo...

Hi Rookie
Ever thought of moving to metric measurements?
0.3 oz looks really odd! 8.5 grams seems much better!
