Re: Bottling without priming
The help manual for BeerSmith says this about the temperature field.. If bottling, enter the temperature of the beer when it is bottled (often room temperature). If kegging, enter the intended storage temperature for the keg (typically the temperature of the refrigerator you will be storing the keg ...

Re: Bottling without priming
Agreed, it is a tricky one. I used to always use fermentation temp when calculating my priming sugar, and results seemed fine to me (certainly not the 3 vols+ that I should have got if bottling temp residuals were to be believed). Off-gassing certainly takes time, otherwise there'd be no point in ca...

Re: 3 Litre Conical Flasks
Just a heads up to some really cheap conical flasks available, someone on the other forum enquired if the company could get some of this size and they just happened to have some in stock. https://www.creamsupplies.co.uk/glass-conical-flask-3000ml-be Thanks for the heads up - just ordered one! I hav...

Re: Bottling without priming
Until recently, my thoughts were exactly the same as yours. I even wondered whether to make allowances for the number of transfers, especially when made at a warm temperature. However, my experiences seem to be suggesting that the disruption to the beer at bottling outweighs CO2 loss earlier in the...

Uploading is obviously preferable, but if you are looking for an incredible simple and fast image hosting site, try PostImg . You don't even need to make an account (although you will be unable to edit your pics later if you don't), and it is way faster than PB ever was. I'm not sure PB have done th...

Re: Bottling without priming
I've always been a bit dubious about the "residual CO2" volumes that some of the calculators quote (BeerSmith does it, too). I think the idea is that you enter the maximum temperature at which the beer has been held during fermentation, which for most would be 20C or so. Once the CO2 has escaped at ...

Re: Low Pressure Regulator advice
I have a pretty standard regulator that came with (from memory) a 0-100(ish) PSI gauge. I recently broke this gauge (there is a thread on here about it), and replaced with a 0-60 gauge. This swap was very easy and I wish I had done it sooner, as the new gauge is much easier to read than the old one....

Re: Estimate CO2 pressure?
Yeah - I was aware that the 1/4 inch thread was 1/2 inch or so across, but what threw me was that the existing gauge had a thinner section between thread and the square nut. This thinner section was the only bit visible (thread was entirely within regulator), so I was a little thrown by that - simpl...

Re: Estimate CO2 pressure?
if it's the common parweld regulator that a few of the brewshops carry then it's a 1/4" BSPP thread. OK, so the regulator I have is this one. They do indeed state a 1/4 inch "parallel threaded" gauge, but this gauge that I have just received seems to have a larger thread on it. Have I been sent the...

Re: Estimate CO2 pressure?
Thanks guys. Yeah, you're right - cylinder should be secured. Lucky its a short 15kg one, so didn't have too far to fall, but still. My only defense is that we have recently moved so things are still in "temporary accommodation".. Regulator seems OK apart from the dial, which obviously took the brun...

Re: Estimate CO2 pressure?
Also - perhaps a simpler question :) I think my regulator is a "bog standard" from Malt Miller a couple of years ago (can't see them on the site now, could post a pic if required). If I was want to replace the gauge, does anyone know the thread size? Seems 1/8 and 1/4 bsp are the most likely candida...

Estimate CO2 pressure?
Minor crisis - my better half has knocked over the CO2 cylinder and stuffed the regulator pressure dial. The regulator itself still appears to work fine (pressure increases when I turn the knob), but I have no idea what the pressure is (dial is totally stuffed, plastic cover and needle off and bent ...

Re: Immersion Chiller - one x long loop or multiple short?
If you want fast chilling, especially in the summer, consider building a second small single coil which can sit in a pot of iced water ahead of the main coil. It speeds up the later stages a lot, for the cost of a £1 bag of ice per brew and an easy build. I used to fill a large ice chest with cold ...

Re: Immersion Chiller - one x long loop or multiple short?
Also dont forget depending on the brew pitching @ 25-30c while actively chilling down to an optimum temp for primary can give the initial oxygen hungry population growth stage a good boost.. Yeah, I've already got into this habit. Stop at about 24-25 now and pitch, dropping to ferment temps over th...

Re: Immersion Chiller - one x long loop or multiple short?
Yeah I like the principle Fil, I'm just allergic to cleaning as it is the biggest PITA in my current setup/brew space. I know have full electrics (45A circuit) so I can brew electric in the shed with no extension leads, but still no plumbing - which I think is too much of an ask at the moment (would...
