Re: Do liquid yeasts really make that much difference?

My opinion is that liquid yeast is best for most types of beer. There are beers that rely entirely on the yeast and fermentation temperature to provide the taste (Adnams Broadside for example) The only dry yeast i use is US-05, but very rarely. It's important to note that liquid yeasts have a much ...

Re: Batch sparge in a bag

you could always try buying bottled water and see if that stops the taste? I think I sort of hijacked my own thread by commenting on the flavour I'm getting. I'm sure I started a topic on it previously. However...... The last brew I've done was made entirely with bottled water. Just got it in the b...

Re: Batch sparge in a bag

I think I posted on BIABrewer.info that the closest I could think was old stewed hops but I use fresh vaccum packed hops that are stored in the freezer. When I 1st tasted the flavour 20 odd years ago I was using loose packed hops from bags that weren't even sealed. Cheers Tom Ah yes I think I comme...

Re: Batch sparge in a bag

I suppose that if you're adding it 15 mins before the end of the boil, the majority of the bittering compounds would have been extracted by then? Might give it a go myself sometime, I'll add it to the list of things to change in my search for the " flavour " that I'm trying to eliminate. Although I ...

Re: Batch sparge in a bag

Soupdragon, Thanks for the questions. i was thinking about trying a few BIAB but I dont really want to make 5 Litres of beer each brew day. So I was going to try BIAB then add DME to make up a 23 litre brew length. Just a question: Do you add the DME to the FV or do you add it to your boil? Hi pota...

Re: Dregs

Hi

They quoted that over the last 6 months the figures were.............Min : 53.10 Avg 69.95 Max 88.6 as CaCO3
Our water really is quite soft so I have no reason to doubt their figures.

Cheers Tom

Re: Batch sparge in a bag

Thanks for all the input guys, it's something I will have a go of when I next get a brew on :) RdeV....... The way you describe that maxi BIAB, it sounds exactly what I was thinking about. I'll go and have a good read of whatever is on the end of the link. My original idea was to eliminate the mess ...

Re: Batch sparge in a bag

HI Won't be for a good month or so tho, just done a brew so I'll have to wait until another barrel gets to near empty. With my current method I'm hitting Graham's expected O/G. targets quite easily. I'll definately try batch sparging with the voile next time tho or would you reccomend filling my sto...

Batch sparge in a bag

Hi all I know we can do anything we like and it'll either work or it won't BUT is there any reason why I can't batch sparge my mini mash, BIAB style, draining the wort into a seperate bucket while I soak the grains in the bag again? I usually mash less than 2 kg of grain so don't fill my stockpot ( ...

Re: Dregs

Hi I found most of the information on the United Utilities web site but a figure for total alkalinity as CAC03 was missing. I emailed them and about a week later they replied with the missing info. I can't remember exactly how it worked out using Graham's calculator but I needed to add 3 different t...

Re: Dregs

Hi Soupdragon I thought about trying bottled water but got distracted by other possibilities and eliminated them instead, now it's top of the list again (along with fermentation time). I am very keen to know how things work out with bottled water for you. I read my water report and altered my grain...

Re: Dregs

So it appears this is two issues to look at. I'm gong to try buying in bottled water and switch to a new yeast for the next brew and see what happens. Thanks guys. Hi Forgive me if I'm wrong but in your thread " all grain brewing problem " I got the impression that you'd tried a brew with bottled w...

Re: all grain brewing problem

Hi With my most recent brew ( still in the fermenter ) I used bottled water just to rule out my supply. I honestly don't think that it's an infection as the taste is exactly the same as when I used to brew over 20 years ago and the gear I'm using now is all brand new. Only did a couple of kits befor...
