Re: Jim's Northeast Brewer's Night.

It ended up not being too bad a night. Got chatting to the owner, who's a nice bloke and they got presented with an award from CAMRA whilst I was there.

Re: Jim's Northeast Brewer's Night.

There's a north east homebrew club meet up at the Town Mouse in Newcastle tonight at 7pm.

It's a Facebook group (I'm not on Facebook myself) but I intend on gatecrashing if anyone else is interested?

Re: How big an immersion coil?

Where are you based? I have a copper double coiled immersion chiller sitting doing nothing since I got a grainfather. It'll be a pig to post but if you're local (north east uk) we could arrange something.

Re: Crystal malt in a Bohemian Pilsner

Assuming you're aiming for 5%ABV, I make that roughly 3% of the grain bill. I reckon that's ample.

Re: Crystal malt in a Bohemian Pilsner

Yeah that's loads of carahell. I've used a bit of it in pale ales and saisons to add a touch of malty sweetness, up to 8% I think. I used about 8% of Melanoidin malt in my last saison and it was splendid. I like a touch of sweetness but this pilsner went a bit too far. I should've seen it coming re...

Re: Crystal malt in a Bohemian Pilsner

Not sure if this is useful to you or not but I just recently made this one: https://www.speidels-braumeister.de/en/brewing-recipes/bohemian-lager.html It uses quite a lot of carahell and it's turned out far too sweet for my liking. I now have 20l of the stuff to work my way through. I think if you d...

Re: Jim's Northeast Brewer's Night.

If you keep the thread updated with location, date and time, I'd love to put some faces to names but can't guarantee my attendance.

2 kids under 5 and a missus who hates beer may limit my ability to meet up.

North East Brew Clubs

On the back of a recent intro from Mattharte, I noticed there's a fair few folk from the north east (uk) but can't seem to find any local brew clubs who meet up for beer swaps, competitions and whatnot. I know Jim is from up this neck of the woods and there's a fairly regular meet-up for a bit of cr...

Re: Stuck Fermentation?

Any particular reason you made a starter? From my experience there's no need as rehydrating should be sufficient. I've just recently made a dark hefe and 1.016 is not too high for bottling, especially after 3 days of consistent readings. It's best drank fresh anyway so get the bugger refrigerated as...

Nah there was no sharpness that I perceived, it's a drop in the ocean in a 5 gallon brew.

Re: Grapefruit IPA

I zested and juiced mine. Put the juice in at the end of the boil and put the zest in just enough vodka to cover for a week and lobbed it in with the dry hops (amarillo) for 3-4 days. The grapefruit taste was really prominent bit not overpowering. When it was ready it was all gone in a week over Xma...

I was reading that article on parti-gyle just the other day, great reading. Sad to hear it may end up being a thing of the past.
