Summer and Hull Melon Hop combo
Haven't used either of these hops before and not a lot about them on the internet apart from they are both a bit melony and that they are both a bit underwhelming. This is almost all I've got left before my next order, so they need to get used up at the weekend. I will probably make a 5% pale ale an...

Re: Mash tun porn
Has anyone converted one of these to a brew kettle. I was thinking of buying one with the bottom drain conversion as shown in the pics, then cutting a 40mm hole in the bottom to fit a 3KW burco type element, then false bottom sits over the element.

Re: growing yeast for sale
All of the yeast strains that White Labs offers commercially are not intellectual property. What is considered intellectual property is the name of the breweries from which they were originally obtained. That's why Whites Labs uses the name WLP022 Essex Ale and not WLP022 Ridley's Ale. By naming th...

growing yeast for sale
Does anyone know the legality of buying yeast from another seller and growing it for sale under another name?
Had a look on the whitelabs website but it only mentions registered names and trademarks.

Re: Newport & Ella Hops
It's been a while since I've been on the site  so sorry for the late response I did use Newport as the kettle hop for quite a few beers and I was quite happy with it. Not overpowering or a harsh bitterness. I would use instead of Magnum. I didn't do a stand alone Newport/Ella beer but I occasi...

Re: Amber malt
I am a big fan of 1845 and I based my recipe loosely on that. I love special B in a dark ale though, it brings a big dark fruit punch that adds another layer of complexity. I'm sure I read that once Fullers finish brewing 1845 they keep their bottles in storage for 100 days before they unleash them ...

Re: Munich as a base malt
Am I right in thinking Brooklyn Lager is a Vienna lager? No I don't think so, but they market it as a Vienna. I've tried it on draught and bottle and it doesn't taste very malty to me. The style has mostly died out commercially. There are some Mexican lagers that are Vienna's; Dos Equis is a poor e...

Re: Wakatu hops
They sound very Japanese! They are from New Zealand, but I know what you mean. Sometimes the base valve sticks on my kettle and when I need to open it I have to give it a wakatu! used a load late and dry in a wheatbeer. actually came out pretty well, quite a refreshing pint on a hot day. tha...

Wakatu hops
Has anyone used Wakatu. I just bought 300g off the maltmiller.
I read on a few sites they have a subtle lemon/lime flavour & aroma, but couldn't find many reviews off people who have brewed with them.

Re: Munich as a base malt
If you just use 100% munich as a base malt it's really nice for making a strong Bock type beer. Get the AVBs up to balance the sweetness. If you split it 50/50 with pilsner malt or 1 part each of vienna/munich & pilsner, then you can make a lovely vienna lager. Use a bavarian lager yeast and keep th...

Re: Amber malt
I made this dark beer a couple of years ago. I used 600g of amber and it took about 6 months to mellow out to the point of being drinkable. After 2 months in the bottle I was ready to ditch the lot, but after 12 months it had turned in to a cracking pint, still roasty, but smooth. So it depends how ...

Re: Wheat for Witbier?
I love wit!! I usually use 50% unmalted wheat 50% lager malt. I mash in at 50C quite thick for 15 minutes, then add hot water (almost boiling) to take it up to 63C for 30 minutes. Then add more hot water up to 73C for 15 minutes. Mash out at 76C. No rice hulls needed and never had a stuck mash. I qu...

Re: Cider brew
I would recmmend using apple juice. There are lots of threads on the other brews section. Personally I use 17L apple juice and 1/2 Kg sugar topped up to 23L. When it is fully fermented I rack off then add another 1/2 Kg sugar to taste and then bottle condition for 3-4 days. That's all it needs - I t...
