Re: AMS consistency

I didn't perhaps leave the water for as long as I should have (only 5-10 mins), although I did stir well. I do another batch tonight and see what happens.

Re: returning equipment set-up suggestions

+1 to electric if you can do it - no turning back for me after moving from gas (cost, noise, hassle of refills etc). You're probably aiming a little big (40l batches, 50l boil?) to be able to run an induction, otherwise I would also recommend one of those (love mine for 20l batches, up to about a 30...

Re: AMS consistency

Thanks. Yeah, it's a little weird since it does seem a long way off, but no reason to believe my alkalinity measurements are wrong (have tried with 2 kits). I'll adjust my next batch in stages, checking the alkalinity drop with AMS before adding any other minerals and see if that gets me there. Anno...

AMS consistency

I missed mash pH to the upside for my last 3 brews - consistently, hitting 5.6 instead of a targeted 5.4 (ended up correcting with lactic on all occasions, no harm done to the beer). All times I have been using AMS plus a little gypsum and CaCl. Tonight I finally decided to test my AMS and try and w...

Re: Watch for great head

Nice vid. I must admit I dumped carapils from my grist quite a while ago (used to add it religously) because it just didn't seem to be adding anything. I always add 5% or so wheat malt for a bit of head retention in my pales and it seems to work well.

Lupulin Powder

This stuff looks rather amazing.. http://scottjanish.com/lupulin-powder-vs-pellets-experiment/ I have a lot of time for Scott Janish and his blog, so if he says this stuff is the dogs danglies then I am willing to believe it. Available to home brewers (in the US at least) from the summer, apparently..

Re: Sodastream CO2 setup for pressurised crash chilling

Sounds good Orlando. I am fairly happy now with my cam and groove to 1/4 barb/clamp/hose to disco. I have done complete keg purges (displaced sanitiser) and closed transfers for 6 brews now, and I think I am ready to go out on a small limb here and say these are the best beers I have made to date. I...

Re: Temperature Control

I had very effective temp control on a pale ale using that method I've got a feeling that if a woman won't allow a fridge then she'd probably not go for this :D On the other hand, it's probably the ideal "solution" because after a few weeks of that she'll be begging him to just put a fridge in ther...

Re: Sodastream CO2 setup for pressurised crash chilling

I've now ditched the soda stream and have run a length of 3/16 line from one of my manifolds to a separate low pressure reg which I've screwed to the fridge. I then run the line into the fridge. I also thought I'd try the Starsan keg purge given that if I always transfer to another clean keg the co...

Re: Brew Pi Spark

Right, got you. I followed the standard install which suggested option 1 (I think). I'll play around tonight and see. Thanks again. No worries. Yeah I think you can set multiple methods up, and they will just show as different devices in your weaved page. I never bothered with ssh as I can't see me...

Re: Brew Pi Spark

OK - sounds like you have set up an SSH connection. I didn't do that, I just set up HTTP over port 80 so when I click on my device it jumps straight to the Brewpi webpage (from weaved). I only ssh in on my home network.

Re: Brew Pi Spark

You should be able to just click on your device and see your Pi, assuming it is running? It's quite useful, and apparently adequately secure - although not something I worry too much about as I doubt many Russian hacking syndicates are going to devote too much time to ruining my beer!

Re: Flameout hops, whirlpool and cooling question

As for what you should do, I've tried hopping at flame out with a 10 min stand, a 20 min stand and chilling to 80 before the stand. Which is best? No idea. I haven't tried side by side, but none have stood out more than others, so I now just lob in the hops at flame out and get on with chilling. I ...

Re: Brew Pi Spark

try going to the old weaved site . I found that since I hadn't updated some installation files, my service was pointed there and not showing at remote.it. Same service that has been ported (same login worked on the weaved site), and the Pi was showing. Assuming here of course that you have got the s...

Re: Hop Aroma

I would be surprised if any acclaimed IPA uses less than 5g per litre dry hop. The best clone I've seen for Heady Topper uses nearly 10g per litre. They are rumoured to only use ~4g per litre, but they also have one of the tightest O2 regimes in the industry (hot and cold side) and apparently dry h...
