Re: Woodfordes Wherry - new to brewing

1.020 is infamous as the stuck kit sg, and the Woodfordes kits are infamous for sticking thanks to the tiny packet of naff yeast. I did my kit with CML Real Ale yeast, but a few folks have found this ferments a bit too cleanly, giving a very malty flavour, and a much more alcoholic brew in the case ...

Re: Kit tweaking etc.

Good job I fitted the blow off tube... The golden kicked off like a rocket! Serious bubble blowing in the jug. Settled down now to a nice steady bubble.... No signs of stopping yet.

Re: New Brewing Pot

Something to consider adding to my "Upgrades when money allows" list. ;) At the moment I'm trying to make a start on a budget, looking to upgrade over time to either a larger batch BIAB setup or maybe even a 3 vessel set up (3 vessel is my preference to be honest, I'm a geek and it appeals to my gee...

Re: New Brewing Pot

I'm fortunate, she came to that conclusion without my encouragement! She wasn't keen on the running water initially either, until I explained how you can use a fair bit of it to wash equipment etc. ;) I looked into "no cool" and discussed this with her too, but we both tend to be a bit sensitive to ...

Re: New Brewing Pot

Cool. Taken another step towards all grain/extract today too, ordered a copper immersion wort cooler. Making my own is as far from an option as you can get as I have a bit of arthritis in my hands and a tremor. It'd end up resembling a globular protein molecule.... I discussed cooling with my ...

Re: New Brewing Pot

Yeah, our cooker has a gas hob with a big ring on it that should do the job.

15-18l sounds good enough to me, I'd been thinking of trying to make smaller batches anyway, that way I can make a larger variety of brews without ending up with an insane amount of beer. lol

New Brewing Pot

So, my wife gave me the go ahead to buy a brewing pot. Went for a 30l one form Brew Builder (50l was out of stock I think, wouldn't let me add it to cart). Hopefully big enough for me to make a start with either extract, or BIAB, brewing?

It's very shiny...

Re: Kit tweaking etc.

Right, sorted the golden ale, messed up a bit though and made it a litre too long (24 instead of 23), so tweaked it a tad more. 1x Wilko's Golden Ale kit 1kg light DME 500g brewing sugar (to try to counter the extra litre... :=P ) OG 1.047 (corrected for taking at 25 degrees C). Yeast: 1x CML US Pal...

Re: Kit tweaking etc.

Ok Results so far. The "unstuck" Headcracker was bottled yesterday. FG 1.016, from how many came out of the bottling bucket (the third vessel it had been in) would appear I'd made it a bit on the long side (so sorta another tweak....). Had a taste of the leftovers from the bucket, front of the tongu...

Kit tweaking etc.

So, so far I've got 1 kit bottled (Coopers Mexican Cerveza, wife loves it, I'm not so keen, lacking in the hop department), 1 kit in secondary waiting to be primed and bottled (Woodfordes Headcracker) that had a stuck fermentation finally fixed by pitching a packet of CML Real Ale yeast which got th...

Re: Crossmyloof - too good to be true?

Ok, I'm fairly new to brewing (only really done mead and country wines in the past) so I don't have tons of experience with different yeasts. However I thought I would chip in, having used some CML yeasts. First up, their mead yeast. Mead got me into brewing in the first place. In the past I used to...
