Re: Sodastream CO2 setup for pressurised crash chilling

ha sweet. it's probably made more positive impact on racking to keg than most other things i've done :) without meaning to be pessimistic, if the disco is open to the air, doesn't that kinda defeat the point of the closed transfer? I think it should be OK - the keg was under slight pressure when I ...

you need a carbcap for that flat overspill. best. kegging. addition. ever.
NOthing - just a tube on the end.

Don't worry - got one :) Just carbed up 1L of this in a drinks bottle, will be sampling tonight !

Re: Sodastream CO2 setup for pressurised crash chilling

All done! Went pretty well for a first attempt: https://s30.postimg.org/4rw4bqw3l/DSC_0631.jpg I went the full monty and filled the keg to the brim with Iostar solution, then pumped out to another keg. This pump across took 6 minutes. I then connected to the FV and started that transfer, and in tota...

Re: Sodastream CO2 setup for pressurised crash chilling

Wow, OK! I was kind of hoping it would take about as long as normal - might need to put a bit more time aside. Planning to give it a go tomorrow morning. I have been watching a few videos on it and it looked like they were doing it in 10 mins or so (one guy had a timer set up). What sort of pressure...

Re: Sodastream CO2 setup for pressurised crash chilling

"Stick a small block of wood under the beer-in side and then put a gas disconnect on the gas-in side with a piece of tubing going into a glass/bottle/bucket. Keep the pressure relief valve closed. When the beer reaches the gas dip tube, beer will come out (duh! ). Stop the beer flow and switch to t...

Re: Yeast taste from wlp002

I use a standard temperature controller with the sensor in a thermowell placed in the wort. I think if I were to plot my fridge temperature and wort temperature data it would look very similar to yours. The fridge temperature plummets during active primary. It's a bit disconcerting when first obser...

Re: Yeast taste from wlp002

What does 'fridge setting' refer to there, Matt? My understanding of the Brewpi is that is uses 3x PIDs; fridge to fridge temp, heater to fridge temp and a third, "virtual" PID, which is fridge setting to beer temp. So basically it uses PIDs in the standard way to target a fridge temp with either h...

Re: Sodastream CO2 setup for pressurised crash chilling

OK here's another thought. Does it matter if your gas tube is below the liquid when carbonating? If it doesn't, then you can simply attach a gas disconnect to the receiving keg instead of holding the PRV open. When the beer hits the bottom of the dib tube, it will be forced out of the gas connector ...

Re: Sodastream CO2 setup for pressurised crash chilling

right, three kegs.. first with 20L starsan. push starsan to second keg with enough co2 to move 20L liquid now we have one keg of "20L co2" and one of 20L starsan push beer to first keg, displacing co2 into second, which displaces starsan into third. could possibly have the top off the last keg or u...

Re: Sodastream CO2 setup for pressurised crash chilling

I'm kegging tomorrow and was planning to try this. The issue is overfilling. I've read a few solutions, weighing scales, keg-and-ball level measure, and finally the simplest (which I thought I would try) which was to attach a grey gas disco to the IN post. Apparently you can hear (sounds unlikely b...

Re: Yeast taste from wlp002

From what l've read, it is a hot fermenter, the wort can rise by 5 degrees on it's own. I've seen the biggest temp differentials fridge/beer of any yeast so far, since I got my Brewpi (OK - so not that many different yeasts, to be fair). WLP002 does go off like a rocket and is usually done for me in...

Re: Sodastream CO2 setup for pressurised crash chilling

OK so this has arrived and first impressions are very favourable. A really solid and compact bit of kit that feels very well made. It is all metal apart from the dial and gaskets (metal knob as well, although it doesn't look it in the pics). There's not a lot of travel between off and max, however (...

Re: Sodastream CO2 setup for pressurised crash chilling

Here's an interesting snippet (from here ). If your CO2 has a 99.5% purity, then the impurity is 0.5%. For purchased CO2, the assumption is that the impurity is always air, so only 1/5 of the impurity – 0.1% — should be oxygen. If you were to add to your beer one Volume of CO2 with an impurity of 0....

Re: Sodastream CO2 setup for pressurised crash chilling

EDIT - I've backed off the pressure to about 0.5psi which is about as low as I can get the gauge to register pressure. I'm thinking that all the rig needs to do for the moment is to prevent a vacuum, whilst minimising the risk of CO2 loss and cylinder drain. So I think this means aiming for the low...

Re: Sodastream CO2 setup for pressurised crash chilling

When I close the in-line tap on the low pressure reg it gradually "pumps" up to 1 psi. Then when I open the tap and allow the pressure into the Chronical the pressure drops right down again. I think it is then building up very very gradually but never gets near 1 psi. Maybe this indicates a leak on...
