Re: Simpson's Malts.

I doubt it.

This says price was 106p/Kg in Jan 2023, rising from 74p in Jan 2022 (43% increase) and from 72p in Jan 2021 (47%).

Re: Simpson's Malts.

Is that the new price you've been quoted? That is a 38% price rise :(

Re: Simpson's Malts.

I will be interested to see what you have to pay next @Mashbag...I was told in December that Crisp's prices were going up by c.40% in Jan this year. If you see similar, your £18 sack will now be about £25. Malt Miller's prices have certainly risen quite a bit. e.g. Simpsons GP was £1.97/Kg a year ag...

Re: Ales and Beers (17th, 18th and a bit of 19th Century)

It’s the Edward Winch and sons amber ale from 1814.

Current plan is to use Crisp No. 19 MO and Crisp Amber malts OG 1041 with a Fuggle type hop to 39 IBU (calculated).

Re: Ales and Beers (17th, 18th and a bit of 19th Century)

And Cobnut ... if you think I rant on and on about wrongly using "modern" brown malt in these early recipes, wait to you try amber malt (if you're thinking of using "modern"). The modern stuff in the proportions suggested by 19th C. recipes will draw your ar** up to your mouth (astringent x10). (I ...

Re: Ales and Beers (17th, 18th and a bit of 19th Century)

Thanks Ron, that makes sense. Looking at what I brewed, it was 79.3% Chevallier malt, 15.2% (modern) brown malt and 5.5% black malt. I’m sure I base this on the DPBC recipe (albeit that is written in Imperial units). Hopping on both occasions was a calculated 80 IBU using Goldings on one occasion an...

Re: Ales and Beers (17th, 18th and a bit of 19th Century)

RE: 1850 Whitbread Porter Who do we believe? The DPBC or Ron P? Both claim to have reviewed brewery records as the basis for their "recipes". One of them must be wrong. At least one! I've made the DPBC recipe twice, both times using Chevallier malt. It is certainly a challenging beer with the % of b...

Re: Elite Stainless Fabrications - 60ltr or 100ltr

Looks very shiny (walesAles would love it!).

What is the price tag?

Or perhaps I’d need to apply my late grandad’s maxim “If you have to ask the price, you can’t afford it!”

Re: overnight no-chill brewdays

Yep some brewers do NOT boil the wort. Lars Marius Garshol writes about them in this article: https://byo.com/article/raw-ale/ He has also written a fascinating book about historical brewing techniques. It is largely focused on the Nordic and Baltic countries, but there are a couple of old British "...

Yeah I've just been out to my shed to check on my latest beer (a lager!). Thermometer out there says 0.9C.

The lucky lager is in the fermenting fridge at a balmy 8.9C!

Re: Refractometer

I stir the wort and squirt a moderate quantity onto the prism, closing the plastic lid squeezes out the excess. I confess I am onto my second refractometer. The first had 2 accidents, one permitted its' continued use, but the second made replacement necessary. The first incident was me dropping the ...

Re: Cheapest place - 5 litre/1gallon All grain kits

Buy a 5 Gallon kit plus a few extra yeast packs, make sure the grains are well mixed and split into 5 packs. Hey presto, 5 x 1 Gallon beer kits! Either that, or make up your own recipes/kits using individual malts. Buy pale malt, a bit each of crystal, black, torrefied wheat, etc. and a few packs of...

Re: Suggestions for my 100th All-grain Brew

Or perhaps a re-brew of my recent Brut IPA with an emphasis on Centennial? I entered it into the BrewCon World Series this year and the judges very kindly scored it 45/50 which got me a Gold medal :D I used Mosaic, Citra and Amarillo, including some of this "Incognito" hop extract for Whirlpool hops...
