Re: Red x smash
What about adding gelatin building the 50m copper chiller putting all the the coils at the bottom wait until it's down it pitching temp then just draw 10 liters off the bottom ? the boil will denature the gelatin. However in principle, if you have a way of suctioning the hot break preferentially fr...

Re: Red x smash
What about recirculating the wort though a smaller biab sy 100l what would only go to the top third of the pot ?? i have done something like that before. The problem is that recirculating into the top third of the pot, the 'clear' wort doesnt stay there and rapidly mixes with the rest of the wort t...

Re: Red x smash
Using hop spiders and have a racking arm on. The fermenter also gonna use 3 bouncer Mac daddy's with all 3 filters available In your brew length you are looking at having around ~10 L of hot break. The hop spiders will take care of the hop material, but you are still left with all that hot break th...

Re: Red x smash
Pics would be great. Brew & ferment in same vessel introduces 2 problems that you will need to address: - removal of kettle trub & kettle hops - getting a good seal on the fermenter The last one isn’t normally massively important, but you may struggle to do gravity transfers and could have to resort...

Re: Red x smash
An engine hoist would do the trick, given a suitable load bearing point. At its worst this is going to weigh about 80-90 kg when you pull it up. There are people doing BIAB ~ 200Kg grists using just the bags, but perhaps some nylon straps to take the main weight. They are crazy people, but the mecha...

Re: Red x smash
Didnt see the 180L batch size on the phone (squinting). My comment on the hops is that there is almost no flavour/aroma hops, and it seems wasteful to use cascade for bittering. FYI Red X malt is a blend of malts that, when used as 100% of the grist, should land you right at an optimal red colour (w...

Re: Red x smash
You are not saying what batch size, but I would say 100..150L in which case you are very short on hops.
Also Red X is a blend of malts so it is not a SMaSH beer by most definitions

I think they are all NPT, but you can use BSP fittings with PTFE tape. Which is fine for CIP applications certainly but not something I would like to seal a fermenter with

Re: Cheap (is possible) Pump
Previous posts and resulting advice that being unable to rapid chill is the likely root cause ... Would be more than happy if someone can counter what I've already been told I have made 2 lagers both with no chill. Both were good beers that finished far too quickly, widely enjoyed by brewers and ma...

Re: Dark Ale
You could just make your OP or OCH clone and add the chips when it hits terminal gravity? Keep sampling until the oak character is where you want it?

Re: Proven Pilsner Recipe Please
@McMullan : If I am to summarise your points its something along the lines of: - norwegians never brewed much - the beer they made was poor - therefore anything you make according to norwegian traditions (i.e. use kveik) will be poor if you are making a point here can you clarify it? The arguments y...

Re: Brewhouse/Shed Wishlist
I brew in a garden shed, brew in a bag means the crossbeam is the only good hoisting point for the grain bag (I do large batches). You can get away without plumbed in water as long as you can run garden hose from a garden tap or the kitchen, but its nice if the hoses can stay in place permanently, a...

Re: Proven Pilsner Recipe Please
Forget the kveik crap*, .... *The only people consistently banging on about it seem to be trying to make money out of it. Fermenting ‘hot’ might sound great, if you’re really desperate for alcohol, but beers fermented with distiller's strains don’t age well, in my experience. They lack refined char...
