Re: Sudden problems predicting mash pH

10 to 15 minutes into the mash! ... TBH as long as you are consistent when you take it, then it shouldn't matter too much, as long as you quote the time when you have taken the sample because the pH will vary depending on time ;) The salifert kit is actually quite accurate even in water with little ...

Re: Sudden problems predicting mash pH

pH Meter failure, or more probably your water has changed composition. The most critical piece of information is alkalinity, and that needs to be measured and used in place of any guestimate of alkalinity based on 'Hardness' or calcium Levels.

Re: Hydrometer for people with bad eyesight

If you are using an accurate hydrometer your sample size is somewhere between 300 and 500ml (possibly greater with the really good ones), It's a significant proportion of a 20L brew ... and getting 3 readings the same over three days or so ... They are just tools at the end of the day, and frankly, ...

Re: Hydrometer for people with bad eyesight

That is in effect what I have done ever since getting a cheap optical refractometer. The WCF isn't massively different, but there are times when yes it will make quite a difference ... like my Imperial stouts which resemble Disaster Areas spaceship ... and start at about 1.105. using the 'standard W...

Every single time you take a reading!

</QualitativeLabMode>

In all reality every brew day, it's not a big deal, must admit that my Oakton doesn't move all that much between calibrations, and I am only brewing a couple of times a year.

Re: What do you think this is, floating on boiled water?

I've found that it is pretty much impossible to reduce alkalinity effectively by boiling, especially for a pale beer, and as Orlando says it's not controllable. Even when you add an excess of calcium and then boil I've never been able to get the alkalinity to drop below 80-85mg/l (from 320mg/l!) so ...

Need to get mine sorted before they change back to reservoir water rather than the Borehole water we've had for the summer :(

Graham would have had NO confidence in CAMRAs ability to edit any of his work. He used to be extensively scathing about the amendments the editors at CAMRA made to his books.

Re: Strange pH readings in mash

ATC is not supposed to compensate for extremes. If you calibrate at 20C then I wouldn't rely on ATC to give a decent reading beyond 25C

Re: Water treatment inPorter brewing

I think your issue is a lack of calcium rather than reducing your alkalinity, any further than what you have. With an alkalinity of 24 (calcium around 16), I find that I have to add 75mg/L of calcium to get a pH round 5.4-5.5 with a 100% pils malt grist. If I don't do this then my pH can end up arou...

Re: Demise of Hop and Grape

It's really sad news, I rem, ember buying my first mash tun and 60L boiler from John at HnG :( I have said it some time ago, Use them or loose them, and I guess that there are enough retailers on line selling 'cheap' that the quality physical retailers can't compete. ... I know I'm guilty of buying m...

Re: Should chilling begin at 'final gravity'?

Most commercials will do a FFT and if casking will 'stop' fermentation when the gravity is 2 points above that determined by the FFT. personally I allow it to ferment to 'stability' then RAISE the temp (for ales) a few degrees to ensure complete fermentation and the yeast clears up after itself, the...
