Re: Home grown hops 2022

I've read of some people keeping picked hops in the freezer without drying, but cannot vouch for what happens to them when there. Doesn't work - can vouch for that personally. Appreciate bittering with a known aa content makes sense but I grow mine solely for bittering. Does mean a bit of trial and...

Re: Home grown hops 2022

Brewed 50 litre Green Hop beer today. Used Brewers Gold and Challenger for bittering and 750 gm of freshly picked Bramling Cross for aroma. No idea how it could turn out. Please let us know Eric. Too late for me to try something similar now with a holiday coming up but it's now obvious I don't use ...

Re: Dry Hopping

I "no chill" as standard now. Well, as mentioned before, I reverted to no chill for the 1st time in years on the last brew. That meant no 50g (homegrown) cascade addition at 55C as would normally happen. Primarily because of this, but also having properly read Floyds post: http://scottjanish.com/wh...

Pick Your Own

For various reasons I'm not harvesting all the hops this year. If anyone out there is within striking distance of Northallerton and fancies some home grown you're welcome to come and take what there is. Caveat is you need to decide when each is ready - I hate trying to determine exactly when the bes...

Re: Adnams Southwold Bitter

Not Southwold this time (we go there every spring), but Eastbridge near Minsmere. The Eels Foot is the local and the Bell at Middleton not too far away - that's the one that serves Adnams bitter and Ghostship straight from the barrel :D We're an annual in Southwold, Brixham and Broadstairs - the la...

Re: Dodgy looking growth in cordial and liqour

If it has a sharp smell and an acidic taste. IPA is bang on the money. That doesn't mean it is toxic and should be throw away, it is just a different product with different uses. I make vinegar. Looks like "Mere Vinaigre" to me Sorry for delayed reply. Apparently no issues with smell or taste?!? Ha...

Re: Dodgy looking growth in cordial and liqour

IMG-20220819-WA0002.jpg Wasn't aware the other 3 hadn't loaded - this is the best of them. I have a video of another they did but no idea if that can be attached - probably not - pity as a whitecurrant liquor hence much clearer and shows the 'mass' moving about without breaking up. Can't get a shot...

Dodgy looking growth in cordial and liqour

My daughter has previously made cassis but decided to try a cordial as well this year. The result is a 'growth' in all the bottles. She maintains she did everything correctly but clearly that's not the case. Any ideas what it is and are they salvageable? IMG-20220819-WA0004.jpg IMG-20220819-WA0003.j...

Re: Home grown hops 2022

Did you used to drink in the Fox and Goose by any chance? Only occasionally to be honest. Cross and White Lion in the village the regular haunts. Albert and Nutclough on a Thursday - Goose Eye (when still in Goose Eye) if someone fancied a drive out - Hare and Hounds if we fancied a walk. And of co...

My view from the front door is the two churches at Heptonstall!
As good a view as anywhere in the country in my opinion!!!

Pity you have to contend with the A646 assuming they're still buggering around with it in 'royd - best mate still lives up Stubbs.

Where are you in the County by the way?
Just outside Hebden Bridge, about 600 feet up and south facing.
I'm a Heptonstall lad myself!

Re: Home grown hops 2022

The First Gold must have died, but the Challenger sprawls everywhere, so I've just been taking root cuttings every winter and trying them in different places! Interesting that you fear you've lost your First Gold. Mine has become the poorest performer of the lot although 3 years ago was by far the ...

Re: Dry Hopping

Interesting read here: http://scottjanish.com/what-we-know-about-dry-hopping/ Go to 'Dry Hop Contact Time' sub heading. Happy brewing! Cheers Floyd I'm sure I read stuff from Scott when last researching this but not such a comprehensive article. As always, there will be others happy to completely c...

Dry Hopping

As I'm sure others are, I'm looking at ways of reducing costs and waste (water - reverting to no chill to see the effect) but not - obviously- at the risk of lowering quality. Before dry hopping - brew mainly heavy hopped IPA's, I drop the brew fridge down to 8C and dry hop for 3 days. Been doing th...
