Re: BM20 Table/Stand Suggestions

The Aldi version of the step up is also perfect for the job. About £15, but only seasonal availability.

Re: Apple IPA

Oh, aye. I never thought of snakebite. I used to quite enjoy that too. Or “diesel”, when you add a bit of blackcurrant cordial to it. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180815/850648f8701ac5fc7615faa5533d38a8.jpg Diesel was called “ leg over” by the rather dubious young women drinking it in Walsall...

Re: Starsan into wort

I remember seeing a video a few months ago of one of five star staff drinking some diluted star san, but can’t find it on a quick search now. It may have been Charlie Tallie. It was designed to prove how safe it was in our beer. It is also apparently a major ingredient in Coca-Cola and other Colas. ...

Re: Ordered a Grainfather!

I had no previous brewing experience before starting to use my Grainfather in January but it is fantastic. 2 brews in a day would definitely be doable and reduce time taken per brew considerably, the clean up takes a while in particular so 2 brews from 1 cleanup would be good! I don't have the grain...

Re: What fridges are we using?

On a similar line, what would people advise as a fermentation fridge? Likely to be nearly new or new as I would prefer not to have the uncertainty of early demise! I plan to use it with a fermentosaurus as they seem to be back in production judging by the Malt Miller site and the build quality of th...

Re: Dry English Yeast

I only tried CML Real Ale once, admittedly my first ever brew so maybe my error/s but it had an odd flavour profile I didn't enjoy which I haven't had in any other brew and has not mellowed 6 months later; other feedback will be interesting. Several other brews of English bitter with MJ 36 Liberty B...

Re: Free up space in fermenting chamber after 72 hours?

Sounds like I should probably just wait until the space is freed up when the current batches are done fermenting and not rush it! Cheers It is particularly difficult with the first two or three batches when you’re desperate to start drinking them! They will probably be a lot better with consistent ...

Re: Free up space in fermenting chamber after 72 hours?

My experience as a novice in the last eight months, with lots and lots of useful help from members of this forum is that whilst your suggestion sounds logical and may work, temperature consistency for the yeast seems paramount. I have now completed 12 all grain batches and have experienced lots and ...

Re: Demise of Hop and Grape

I don’t have a LHBS anywhere near, so it is Internet orders for me, with some excellent and some not so good service so far over the last year. This thread made me reflect, although slightly more expensive, particularly with the delivery: recommendations on the forum, advice over the phone and rang...

Re: Post-boil hops

I use my own hops in a muslin bag with the biggest ball-ache being to keep it 'under water'. I don't have anything like a hop basket so rely on stainless steel (santised) weights. A 70g whole hop addition needs a 1lb weight and even then it can 'float'! Meaty, When you next go to Dunelm or Wilkos, ...

Re: Quantities of Sparge water

With regards to the grainfather aspect of the question: I Initially found that the suggested mash and sparge volumes from the Grainfather app made a very thick consistency grain bed that was difficult to stir and tip the malt additions out single-handedly. I had read elsewhere a suggestion to increa...

Re: Grainfather mash water level

If I understand your question correctly, that is normal for me as well. The pump essentially pumps a greater volume of wort than can be filtered through the grain basket and the grain. The overflow ensures good mixing of the wort. There is a calculator on the Grainfather Connect app which will allow...

Re: Dishwasher sanitising

Rinse 'em out soon after drinking the beer and there will be no crud to remove. Agree and do this too, but always use a couple of clear bottles with each batch to see how quickly the beer clears initially and despite immediate rinsing there is a fine coating of what I assume is yeast residue around...

Water cannot fully get into base to remove real crud so soak and sanitise
And buy a good bottle brush. Yeast residue in the few clear bottles I use is much more obvious and only removed with brushing too.
