Re: Carbonating half full kegs
Other thing to bear in mind with that sort of headspace is the importance of burping the keg to displace oxygen. To answer your question, they will carbonate but not sure to what level and don't know off the top of my head how to calculate it... You'll have 6L of CO2 at 40 psi initially and 13 L of ...

Re: Mead final gravity
Thanks chaps. Trouble is it is already bottled in glass :) I'll crack the lids now and then to see if any pressure is building up then I'll put it out in the shed to mature, with crossed fingers! Thankfully all screw caps and swing tops, not corks. I'll need to check gravity before adding campden in...

Mead final gravity
Hello Can anyone tell me a normal FG for mead please? I am using Crossmyloof dried mead yeast from eBay. Started at 1.085 and seems to be finished at 1.006. I had expected to go to 1.000 or even lower (batch of bramble wine has just gone to 0.992). I made quite a few additions of acids which will ad...

Re: Elvis Juice!
Chucked in dry hops and zest yesterday. 5 grapefruit and 3 oranges... the aroma of the grapefruit zest was nothing compared to the oranges, no idea if that's normal or because they've been kicking around too long!
I think it'll be a lovely brew whatever though.

Re: Elvis Juice!
:) I couldn't believe the smell in my brew shed yesterday when I went in to knock the fridge down from 21 to 18 degC. Been a while since I brewed such a hoppy number and since it was all pellets they're pretty much all in the FV! I suppose that means a lot of flavour is being stripped from the beer ...

Re: Elvis Juice!
Hi Floyd - any updates on how yours is tasting? I can't get my car out of my drive today due to ice so getting this brew on finally! And sadly I haven't made it to the brewery again to ask for details... Re-reading the recipe, it says to add the grapefruit peel to the FV, so I'll add it in a couple ...

Afraid I don't Phil, but if you open yours up and take a photo I'll annotate what to do.
However, as discussed in this thread, did you try just removing the false bottom to see if that improves things?

Re: Does rape honey make good mead?
Thanks for the responses, will see if I get some and then have a go!
When soft set rape honey can have a lovely texture which I can see selling well, maybe this outweighs the mustard aroma!

Re: Does rape honey make good mead?
Thanks Carnot. I was hoping for some experience as having to wait 2-4 yrs for a result makes this mead game a bit tricky!
We'll have to agree to disagree on the flavour I suppose!

Re: Does rape honey make good mead?
For clarity - like other honey it is basically sugar so I know it will ferment very happily. I'm asking about flavour.
As we have discussed on another thread heather is strong and takes a while to mature, so maybe mixing in some rape would be beneficial?
