Re: Bulldog Beer Kits - Bizarre Instructions

Hi Hmmm ... this is one of those "grey-areas" isn't it ... aeration of the wort before fermentation, definitely good ... aeration of the wort after fermentation, definitely bad ... aeration of the wort during fermentation, well that seems to depend :? ... certainly, it's not always bad, there are br...

Re: Brewday discrepancies

Hi Dave So when beer engine says mash efficiency it is actually the efficiency for 17L ie what goes into the FV. But still can't understand what is 1080 gravity... From Beer engines user notes: If mash efficiency is selected, then measure the volume and original gravity of the sweet wort collected f...

Re: Brewday discrepancies

Hi Dave If you're getting the right volume into your FV, then I'd suggest you've got Beer Engine calibrated (in terms of losses) for your setup allright ... it's just the efficiency figure that you need to sort out (I know, that's easy for me to say  ) ... with respect, are you sure you're usi...

Hi wobblylegs its the same colour in the usa as it is here. ... fair enough ... but the Newcastle Brown in the (clear) bottle I had hold of this afternnon in Tesco's looked a lot more (Cadbury's Dairy Milk) chocolate brown coloured than that pic that seymour posted ... but hey-ho ... good luck with ...

Re: Newkie broon recipe

Hi Seymour I bet you're right. Even as it is, though, it's not brown at all. It's really a clear, medium orange-amber: http://img4-2.realsimple.timeinc.net/images/daily-finds/food/0709/df-newcastel-brown_300.jpg ... that pic looks more like what they sell here in the UK as Newcastle Amber Ale, I dou...

Re: Newkie broon recipe

Hi I had a try following the recipe from the Szamatulski's "Clone Brews" book which was close ... but no cigar :( ... I attributed the fail mostly to my deciding to use Nottingham yeast though :? ... which left it too dry and over-emphasised the hops and the chocolate malt ... it was a nice beer, ju...

Re: Suggestions wanted re orange peel

Hi Wilf I believe if you want your beer to actually taste of oranges then you need to be adding fresh orange peel (no pith) into the fermenter. Traditionally it would have been into secondary but not many people do that primary/secondary stuff any more, if you don't, then it goes into your FV after ...

I hope you don't think I'm trying to trick anyone. ... of course, when it comes to communicating with strangers , that we only know over the internet, then our default position should be to assume that anyone and everyone is trying to trick us :? ... only by assessing the quantity and quality of ou...

Re: Weyermann® Einkehrschwung (showcasing CaraRed Malt)

Hi Seymour, or anyone else who may be able to help Great looking recipe, thanks for sharing, but can you give any advice on how to interpret the hops section of it please ... Hops: Aroma hops about 25 BE (2 additions) - "Pearl" ... I don't think I've seen that sort of description before ... is "BE" ...

Re: Wherry kits, availability & advice

Hi Orlando Over on the BrewUK forum there is a recipe for Saracen Tweaked Wherry (link) ... which is about as generally well reknowned over there as Ditch's Stout is over here =P~ I made one of those as my first ever brew back in April 2012 ... and it all got consumed at one BBQ/Garden Party around ...

Hi Ditch This may not be the right forum for this advice ... but I'd feel bad if I didn't share it with you :? , so I'll go ahead anyway ... Only one little glitch was my " Iron Retention " ... Suddenly, I didn't feel so blazè and clever. I'd just come through the biggest health scare of my life and...

Re: Thornbridge Seaforth IPA (from IPA book) Recipe

Hi AdyG Bear in mind that you may have to wait some time for this beer to be "properly conditioned" ... I've only recently got around to reading the Pete Brown book "Hops and Glory", and since then caught up with how the story progressed after the exploits described in the book, on Pete Brown's blog...

Re: Teach me about Worcester hops, please.

Hi jmc That information about "the Golding vine" and "Mathon White" is a good find ... but I think my point was that just because some people (e.g. farmers) were aware of there being different types of hop plants (that we would now know as varieties) with different characteristics (e.g. how fast the...

Re: Teach me about Worcester hops, please.

Hi Seymour I know I don't contribute over here on JBK as much as I should  ... but I still get a lot out of it from "lurking" (Thank You All!! :D ) ... but I'm interested in this "searching for precision in an imprecise world" notion, so I hope you don't mind if I pitch my two-penn'orth in :wi...
