Re: Swing top seals

i buy regularly from aliexpress - in my latest purchase last week, due to uk government instructions, they added 20% v.a.t. at the end.
Somewhat erodes the ali advantage.

Re: Bad times on Kombucha land

My scoby has lived in my shed for over a year now with just a tea towel over it.

I must just be very lucky not to have got maggots.

I did have a suspicion that a snail might have travelled over it once though. #-o

Re: Hawkshead - Windermere Pale

Enjoy your memories. It will never be the same again. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-cumbria-52294076 Coronavirus: Hawkshead brewery makes staff redundant I've met Matt a few times and he is a thoroughly decent bloke. I don't understand why they made everybody redundant instead of furloughing...

Re: Kombucha

PM me Jim, I'll send you a scoby. I make 3 bottles a week. Green tea tastes best imho. 6 tablespoons sugar 6 teaspoons green tea 2 kettles hot water. keep covered and warm. A large mixing bowl will do fine. I use an aquarium heater in the shed but I get too much evaporation really. repeat weekly. mo...

Re: Advice Please

I used coffee sacks when I tried it.
they were 50p each at the time but can be quite expensive now.
Wild fermentation is the way to go and no temperature control is necessary.
My batch was pretty much all cookers and undrinkable.

new british hops

I spotted this on the Radio 4 listings for Sunday morning https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m00057p8 New British Hops On Your Farm Sarah Swadling meets the brewers showing faith in British hops. Spring is the season for Hop Twiddling. Sarah Swadling finds out what it is, and how it’s done, at Hogs Ba...

Re: Brew day from hell!!!

I wish I got a photo of one of my earlier brewdays when I brewed on the kitchen worktop. Imagine seeing some idiot in cargo shorts and sandals standing on a wet kitchen worktop hoisting a wet bag out of a hot mash. I could have been a meme [emoji38] At least we don't carry about huge glass carboys ...

I wouldnt say a stuck sparge, but it certainly is slow.
Perhaps I should be putting in the larger, less floury things in first.

Re: Brew day from hell!!!

I wouldn't have lost as much beer if I hadn't been multitasking. Agh the myth of multi tasking. This is doing more than one thing at a time, agreed? But, as you add a task it increases how badly you do all them. You might not want to mention this to the "opposition". FWIW my "favourite" is al...

I make it often. I add mustard and caraway seeds. Lovely, and good for you. I'm very open to suggestions for other salt based pickles. My next book to read is Sandor Katz - The art of fermentation. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Art-Fermentation-depth-Exploration-Essential/dp/160358286X/ref=sr_1_1?s=books...

Re: Fruit from amelanchier trees + calamondin

I tasted my Amelanchier fruit this year and it was pretty tasty but you have got to be quick because the birds love it. While you're at it Mahonia berries are ripe at the moment. I'll taste one tonight but Ken Fern and Richard Mabey both say that you can eat them. I keep meaning to gather Sumac but ...
