Re: looking for a good recipe book
Personally I find the 2nd and 3rd editions of Graham's books the best but that is probably because they contain more of the beers I want to brew. I don't have the Greg Hughes book but I have read somewhere that most of the book he just copied the work of others.

Re: Short mash times
Back in the day it was advised to do an iodine check to make sure conversion was complete, personally I've not done this for over 20 years. If you can stll buy the stuff may be worth trying.

Re: The marmalade in Fullers
I have been drinking Fullers all my life and there is definitely an orangey twang to the beers, especially in the bottles. My old Dad would never touch ESB because of the strength. He used to call it Burton Ale because that was what he said it was called in the 1970s. Not quite. Burton Ales were on...

Re: Invert Sugar
I bought a 25kg block from Beko https://www.bakose.co.uk/ I found their website hard to work out as it seemed available in some areas not other so I phoned and was delivered in a couple of days. This was a couple of years back. Well that's because that site is for Bako South East (clue is in the do...

Re: Invert Sugar
When I first bought my block of invert the first few beers I brewed were Graham Wheeler recipes that I was familiar with that used white sugar. Although I never had the same beers to try side by side I did think from my taste memory bank the invert supplied a bit more depth and subtle taste.

Re: Secondary fermentation in a polypin
I always store them with the tap on the top and if it starts to resemble a football release some gas. As I tend to use yeasts that settle quickly I can slowly turn the pin a day before connecting to the handpump and still get clear beer.

Re: Grainfather - first impressions
I move to a GF from a 3 vessel system at the end of last year and it is certainly time saving. I used to underlet but now just add the grain to the liquor. I know they are pricey but I am glad I made the change.

Re: Brew kits in the 80s
I never brewed kits, after a few extract brews went into AG, but my Dad brewed Boots kits and the beer was awful.

One thing I have noticed with the Grainfather is my efficiency has gone up.

Re: has the single pot killed the three pot systems
I recently bought a Grainfather after 40 years of 3V brewing. The main reason being as I'm getting slightly longer in the tooth I am looking for an easier life. I wanted to stop lifting containers of water to shelves etc. Yes I know I could have set up pumps but in the end with the Maltmillers black...

Re: Everything beer engine, polypins, cask and questions
I've been using beer engines and polypins (or cubitainers as they're called here) for years and they work perfectly well for 'cask' ale. If they are primed as you would do for bottled beer then they are just like a real ale would be served in a British pub. I hook up the cubitainer with silicon tub...
