Re: Brewing for Ukraine...

I would substitute "whirlpool" for a hop stand (or spice stand) at the required temp.

Re: Alternatives to Cornys/PBs/MiniKegs.

What about the various 5 and 10L stainless kegs you can get from places like Dark Farms? Use your existing corny keg connect's, etc, and a sodastram co2 bottle with mini regulator? A 5L one would fit in your normal fridge. They are all a bit pricey, but quality kit you only have to buy once? Persona...

Re: Coopers Bitter

If you aren't doing a mash of some description, then you won't have any enzymes to convert the starches in your torrefied wheat, surely?

1864 XB is a cracking pint; but it's even better brewed with Chevalier.

Re: A better spunding valve?

I see, they look a bit like the tube cutters Kegland sell. I'm sure they work fine. A lot better than a pair secateurs. I'd rather spend literally a few quid more, though, and get the JG cutters. Had mine for over 10 years. Refitted the bathroom and central heating system in our old house. Lent the...

Bicycle hydraulic brake hose cutters do a good job if you have them.

Re: Dave Line & Lost Beers

I can't answer for the diastatic malt, but you are right in reducing the hop. I am about to try his McEwans Export recipe, and by my calculations, I would only need to add the amount of hops he specifies to get an approximately correct IBU figure; I can ignore the hop extract he also specifies that ...

But that is to ignore Sam Smith's, Timmy Taylor and the rest who produce mild ales that are both pale and dark, and always have.

Re: Mild

Higher mash temperature= more sugars that yeasts struggle to ferment = more body / lower attenuation Lower mash temperature= more easily fermented sugars thus less body, higher attenuation So, if I were brewing a mild, I would tend to mash higher than normal to give it a bit of body to compensate fo...

Re: Dave Line & Lost Beers

The Draught Bass was particularly good as it was the original Bass taste, not the crap that Marston's brew. I am still using Beer Engine to calculate the hops. I feed in the quantities in the original recipe, which gives way too many IBU's, read the percentages that BE shows and then scale the hops...

Re: Dave Line & Lost Beers

I recently picked my copy up from an Amazon second hand book seller for pennies. I think the postage was the bulk of the cost and even then we were looking at less than £3, so there are copies out there if you fancy one!
