Re: Hop Aroma

Looking at your schedule there's just not enough late hops. Late hops are all well and good (and I agree pretty much with your schedule), but if you are not getting a very significant aroma with 150g of DH in 20l then something is wrong somewhere! That's double the (alleged) rate in Heady Topper(!)

Re: Hop Aroma

There's a lot about on the web about maximising hop aroma if you look for it. A couple of points I would make: 1/ How do your hops smell in the bag? Fresh, well stored hops can be vastly more aromatic than old hops, or hops that have been badly sealed/stored warm. I've noticed huge differences depen...

Re: Refractometer

Anyone got anything good to say about these? I'm going back to hydrometer after really low readings on my wort. I use my refractometer all the time and it always agrees with my hydrometer. Perhaps you got a dud, or it needs calibration? I do still take one hydro reading at pitching, just because, r...

Re: "House Pale" v1

I've been enjoying WLP090 as an alternative to WLP001/US05 I've enjoyed a few WLP008 brews over the past couple of years. Must admit that one has slipped under my radar - not tried it and not heard too much about it. Sounds a little similar to WY1272 from the description? Might be one to put on the...

Re: Sodastream CO2 setup for pressurised crash chilling

Following this thread with interest as its a concept I would like to try. Are any of you planning a brulosophy type experiment and compare side by side whereby one using this new method and another using the 'standard' kegging method? In any case I think I will add the extra regulator and Soda Stre...

Re: "House Pale" v1

Is WLP090 going to be your house yeast? If so why? Just interested as it's one I haven't tried. Not locked in yet. I've been enjoying WLP090 as an alternative to WLP001/US05 for the past year or so (a bit more character, maybe?), but also WY1272 and WLP002 in the same sort of American Pales. Yeast ...

Re:

That looks very nice!! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Cheers! Kegged this one up yesterday, and had about a litre left over which I force carbed in a pop bottle. I must say it tastes great - really earthy/dank (as the Americans might say) from the Columbus, but a nice bit of citrus and fruit go...

Re: Sodastream CO2 setup for pressurised crash chilling

INcidentally, I have given up on gelatin for the moment, whilst I work out this pressurised transfer thing. I am thinking about buying a 150ml syringe and going in through the PRV once beer is cold in keg!

Re: Sodastream CO2 setup for pressurised crash chilling

I have a 1/2" female thread on the FV, but I'd like to use one of my 1/2" barbs on it so that I can easily switch to bottling once the keg is filled. If I can get hold of a 1/2" to 1/4" hose joiner then I can just pull off the 3/8" line with the joiner attached and plug my bottling wand into the 1/...

Re: Sodastream CO2 setup for pressurised crash chilling

What concentration of starsan do you use for the purge water? I don't fancy using 30ml (at the recommended sanitising concentration) each time! Can you use a weaker concentration? I am using iodophor because I am also too tight to use starsan :) Just a "no rinse" dose, which is still 30ml or so in ...

Re: Sodastream CO2 setup for pressurised crash chilling

Have a read of this presentation from last years Hombrew Con in the US. There is an interesting table in there, which shows that you would need to charge and purge 15 times at 30psi to effectively eliminate O2 from a keg. Pushing out a filled keg will give you the same results at 1 bar, so you will ...

Re: New AG set up...starting from scratch...any comments?

I'd agree with leaving water treatment for a bit, pop a campden tablet in your water to deal with the chlorine and leave it there until your a few brews in And have everything else nailed ! Up to a point, IMO. If your water is really unsuited to what you are brewing, results could be a little demor...

Re: New AG set up...starting from scratch...any comments?

Thanks MiB. Yes got a couple of fridges and just need to wire up the temp controller. AMS/CRS? Help me out? Was thinking of a Ss fermenter but not sure whether any extra cash would be better spent on a 2nd kettle? CRS/AMS is a blend of acids used to reduce alkalinity. Have a search around the forum...

Re: Sodastream CO2 setup for pressurised crash chilling

Just to note that I did my second transfer under pressure this afternoon, which also went well. Again, about 10 minutes (OK, 12 this time), and the whole process to me doesn't seem *that* much more of a pain than the standard transfer. I still feel a little squiffy about the waste of water when fill...

Re: Brew Pi Spark

Thanks, about to do some reading up over lunch, some of the programming talk takes me back which still baffles me in places. I believe in the future this should be able to control more than one fridge which would be great for my set up. The parameters would be interesting if you get the chance, eve...
