Re: Insulation for the outside
I use Thermawrap which i cut and taped round my boiler. During the mash I also cover it with a hot water cylinder jacket.

Re: Help with efficiency - what am I doing wrong??
Your lower efficiency is almost certainly due to your dead space being such a large proportion of your brew length. But the only way to be sure is to take a gravity reading before the boil. This way you can work out your mash efficiency and so be sure that is high enough. By the way, are you really ...

Re: Overnight mash tips
As long as the temperature stays above 50C you should be ok. I have done many brews this way and have not had any sour beers.

Re: Ethyl acetate or fusels?
You don't need to aerate wort if you are using dry yeast so I'd eliminate that step. I'd also suggest a no-chill cube. You can then ensure your FV is clean and sterile.

Re: Man go camping, man need beer!
I hate bottling but I do bottle a few brews a year just so I have something to take camping or round a friend's house.

Re: Using my time more effectively...
Isn't all drinking water chlorinated? I thought it was the only way to ensure it was safe to drink after travelling down the pipe.
I mash overnight. In 10 hours I lose about 12C. As long as it stays above 50C it should be safe. BIAB and no chill also save time on the day.

Re: Preparing a stock Buffalo Boiler for brewing
Problem with removing the cut out is that it protects the element. As long as you don't let it boil dry, it's fine. These boilers are designed to sit in a busy cafe supplying hot water where it's quite likely they could be emptied but left on. If you are using it for brewing then it is either going...

Re: Preparing a stock Buffalo Boiler for brewing
My post on how to fit a tap is on the other forum. I believe that Buffalo changed the design so it may not be so simple now. I managed 20 brews without it cutting out. The cause was actually a loose connection overheating. I have now removed both the thermal fuse and cutout.

What you need to add depends on what you are brewing.

Re: Sealing a BV
I think BV is just Ball Valve. A non-standard, and hence confusing, abbreviation though! How you fit the ball valve to the pot depends on what fitting the ball valve has. Mine is parallel BSP so I use a parallel nipple and washer like Jocky but inside the pot I have a socket to attach my bazooka fil...

I had this problem once, only it was stout and made a right mess of the kitchen! Fortunately I realised it was because most of the priming sugar was in the one bottle - I now mix very thoroughly.

Re: Experiences of Liquid Yeast Alternatives
I really like WLP022 Essex Ale. Ferments well, top crops and nice flavour. It's only available Jan/Feb. Seems to be in stock at BrewUK but not Malt Miller.
I've found WLP023 Burton Ale to be very sulphury. I probably underpitched but most yeasts don't cause me issues.

Re: Purple Beer Line Cleaner Quantities ?
My cleaner needs double that which shows it is ridiculous that the manufacturer doesn't give any instructions. How is the maker of the beer line meant to know the concentration of the cleaner?
