Switch to Optic?

Post by Buzz » Wed Jun 11, 2008 2:19 pm

I've only got one more brew left in my current stock of MO and I am considering getting a sack of Optic this time around. My last lot of MO came from Tuckers but I've struggled to get rid of a haze in all the brews I have used it in. It may not be the grain of course but, I thought I might switch to see if it makes a difference.

Now, I have also heard that Optic can be problematic with producing a clear bear if the mash temp is not spot on - anyone have any firsthand knowledge of this? I don't want to jump from the fryingpan into the fryer

That makes me think it's not the malt at fault then. I have struggled with my Bruheat boiler keeping a rolling boil (kept cutting out) so that may have contributed to haze problems on the last few brews. Maybe I'll get some more MO off Tuckers and use my new shiny twin-element boiler to see if it improves.

:D :D I have used whirlfloc on recent brews which gets the wort into the FV in great shape. It's after fermentation (and when its cold) that the problems occur. The haze doesn't worry me other than I'm not sure why my early brews finished lovely and bright and the recent ones not so.

I'll change one thing at a time to see how it goes. Interestingly my brightest beers came when I wasn't fiddling with water treatment so perhaps that's another issue to look into.

For now I'll stick with Tuckers MO and see how it goes...
