hi,
got a few bits from the brewery the yesterday including a 25KG sack of malt. i was assuming it would be marris otter but on the sack it says pearl. sorry if its a dim question but is this another type of pale malt and is it as good?
im sure when i emailed them previously they said they sold marris otter so i might be able to change it if need be.
Hogs Back pale malt
Re: Hogs Back pale malt
Pearl will be absolutely fine, just use it weight for weight in place of M.O.
Re: Hogs Back pale malt
It's another variety of barley. It will make good beer. By the time the brewing process has been completed the effect of all the variables of how you brew and the different additional flavouring/colouring malts, the hops and the type of yeast will make it extremely hard to tell if you had used Marris Otter or not.
However, IMHO Marris Otter is the variety that makes the most flavoursome wort and is worth asking for next time.
The way to satisfy yourself that this is the case is to put very small handfulls of each in vacuum flasks for 60 minutes with mugfulls of hot water at mash liquor temperature. Then have a sip and sniff of the resulting gruels. The Pearl will be nice, but the Marris Otter will be he one with the most "Ovaltiny" flavour.

Re: Hogs Back pale malt
All my Pale Malt comes from the HB.....but I've had both Maris and unspecified "Pale" (which I suspect is probably the Pearle) from them. I think the unspecified Pale makes a slightly lighter coloured beer, but that's only opinion.
I've only had good malt from them though - no complaints whatsoever.
BTW - if you ever visit them, it's also worth nipping to Farnborough to the Home Brew Shop - it's only 4 miles away and they stock Fawcetts floor malted Lager Malt too, which is pretty good IMHO.

Re: Hogs Back pale malt
thanks again everyone.
thats all good then, i think i would prefer my ales to be on the pale side so thats fine.
i did also pay a visit to the home brew shop on my travells to get a few extra bits and will be heading back once ive got my boiler, mash tun and IC done to get a few more bits.
im well excited about my first brew but think it might be another week or so away, so more time to learn.
