I'm planning to try the GW Exe Valley Autumn Glory tomorrow and looking thorugh my malts find I've got no Crystal, but do have British Caramalt. The packaging says it has crystal character but paler - does that mean I'll get roughly the same flavour if I use it instead? Recipe calls for 205g - should the same quantity work OK? (Pale Malt is 4300g, length 23l)
I'm not really worried about deviating from the recipe but I do want it to taste good.
Thanks for any thoughts

substitute british caramalt for crystal?
Re: substitute british caramalt for crystal?
It has a different flavour sweeter and cleaner, less stewed. It won't make the same beer but should still be a nice beer.

You're using a pretty small % of crystal/caramalt. I don't think it will be that big of a difference.
I use caramalt a lot, it's a good malt.

I'm just here for the beer.
Re: substitute british caramalt for crystal?
I think the flavours are quite similar the main diffrence i think will be the colour. The only advice i would give is the possible extract/fermentable sugars are diffrent so i would check before you adjust your recipe for caramalt. happy brewing.

I think caramalt is the better, doesn't have the cloying taste crystal can give
