Bairds Maris Otter

Post by jimp2003 » Tue May 03, 2011 4:52 pm

Hi Guys!

I was thinking of splashing out on a 25kg sack of Maris Otter and I see that worcester hop shop have Bairds on for less than £20 at the moment.

Normally I would get my ingredients from Malt Miller who has Thomas Fawcetts. Is there any difference in quality here?

I know that I am not yet at the standard of producing competition winning ales but I always believe that you should source the best ingredients as much as possible while also addressing the other areas such as water quality, yeast type and preperation etc etc

Any thoughts?

Jim

I recently obtained a sack of Bairds, but as I'm still using up some Warminster's, I haven't tried it yet. I picked up the Bairds on a recent trip around Kent, where several breweries use it. The brewers I spoke to reckon it's just as good as any. We shall see...

It certainly was a lot cheaper!

Without back-to-back brews (exactly the same) it would be impossible to tell. If you brewing standard is that precise that you can tell the difference then there IS a decision to be made. However, in most cases good malt suppliers produce good malt. And that is a very good price. I collect mine from Rob so don't have to pay carriage.
I buy from The Malt Miller

I suspect it will do the job just as well.
If you can tell the difference then you probably have a future as a beer judge!

Bairds is excellent quality malt. I use Fawcetts and I think it's the best malt out there but the difference is so slight.

Thanks for the quick responses guys.

Its just I had not come across the Baird brand before and was not sure if I was comparing apples with apples so to speak.

I feel a certain loyalty to Rob and would usually collect from him but travelling for work is taking me close to Worcester so I might have to try out this deal.

At this stage in my homebrewing "career" my methods are not yet so tight that two brews made with the same ingredients will turn out exactly the same so using a malt of roughly the same quality should not cause me problems :)

If its any reassurance, we use Tons of Bairds Malt at work and the extract values are always better than Fawcetts Malt.

Thats good to know pdtnc.

Unfortunately I did not get to the worcesterhopshop as work took me in a differentdirection so I collected 25kg of Fawcetts from Malt Miller.
