Amber/Dark Malt Extract?

Does anyone know how amber and dark malt extract is made? Specialty grains? Crystal in the amber extract, roasted malt/barley in the dark?

Do malt extract producers give any clue what goes in their amber/dark extracts?

I was wondering about this a while ago and found that the american supplier Northern Brewer give details about the grains that go into their malt extract.....CLICKY

I tried to look for the spec on Muntons extracts but got nowhere unless anyone else can help?

I've noticed most extract recipes in "Brew your Own" magazine use light malt extract, even in stouts and porters. I presume it allowd brewers to fine-tune their specialty grains.

I guess that makes sense as the base malt for an all grain stout would usually be pale malt.

I am very impressed by the range of products for extract brewing in the US (and the prices) and Northern Brewer in particular seems very professional. Its worth looking at their range of extract kits (they have 99 bespoke kits!!) as each one has a detailed spec sheet with brewing guides and might give you inspiration for a brew to put together from ingredients available in the UK.
