Carapils
Hello
Just got hold of a bag of Carapils and, now it's in my hand, I'm not sure what to do with it.
As it's good for head retention and body, is it similar to wheat? If it is, is it something that is used as well as, or instead of, wheat?
I'm thinking of putting with some crystal malt. Again, would this be a bit belt and braces, as with the wheat?
Thanks
David

Re: Carapils
My own ideas for Carapils are as a subtle body-builder for a pale 2.8% ABV beer.

I take it this is for work not for home?pdtnc wrote:My own ideas for Carapils are as a subtle body-builder for a pale 2.8% ABV beer.

Re: Carapils
ha ha ha, no its for home, I see it as a challenge to make something with enough body.
Max % Carapils, a fair amount of Wheat Malt or Torrified Wheat, Vienna & Pale Malts... Hot as it gets Mash, but still ferment with US-05 for a clean taste, probably late hop / Dry hop fairly heavy.

Re: Carapils
Use it to make Broadsword Bitter, a very nice session beer.
Marc Ollosson - Real Ales for the home brewer - page 44
I brew mine re-scaled to 3.4%
On one nightmare of a brewday I ended up with crap efficiency which resulted in a 3.4% beer instead of 3.8%.
This was one of those lucky accidents as I found that at 3.4% it made a really good session beer where you can sink quite a few without feeling too squiffy
I personally find that carapils gives a nice body to a lower alcohol session beer especially with a high attenuating yeast like S-04.

Unfortunately, I haven't got the book. Any rough guides?swiggingpig wrote:Use it to make Broadsword Bitter, a very nice session beer.
Thanks for the input, btw.
