Bulk buying malts question

Post by danskitt » Sun Jan 08, 2012 7:58 pm

I am about to buy my first bulk bag of malts, my question is, if I buy it crushed won't the finer particles work there way down to the bottom of the bag so the first batch would be all big bits and the last would be all small bits or is this not the case?

Been buying 25k sacks for around 20 years, never had a problem. Sometimes there is a bit of flour at the bottom just mix it into the next sack

How long does it take you to go through a sack?
I don't brew often enough to go through one before it would go stale if I bought it crushed.
I'm just here for the beer.

How often do you brew. I brew ever other week so around 12 weeks but it will last a lot longer.

Even when crushed, grain that is kept cool, dry and away from any pests can easily last a year. When I have had some grain knocking about for a while I make a habit of chewing on a few grains before a brewday to see if it is still fresh. Obviously do a visual check but if the grain is crunchy when you chew on it then it is fine.
