Rain normally washes away a lot of the fertilizer before the barley has time to take up the nitrogen from it...
Seems a bit wasteful to me, why not put the right amount of fertilizer on so the barley takes up only what it needs... Rather that leaving fertilizer in the soil for the rain to wash in to rivers...?
I think with the price that is paid by farmers for nitrogen which is around the £330 to £350 the malting barley growers are not throwing the stuff around willy nilly. They apply what they judge the crop needs and have to hope that the weather is ideal for what they have used , sometimes the weather can unfortunately throw a spanner in the works. Without using nitrogen the yields of barley would slump and you would be paying far more for your malt.
Just remember even with a price increase I think the price for malting barley is around the £230/tonne which works out at only £5.75 for 25kg for the farmer.

Another problem with a dry spell during the growing season is that it can result in smaller grains that have lower starch material and therefore a higher proportion of proteins leading to haze problems. Fortunately, this is something that is cosmetic and can be overcome.

That price was just for one of our malts. British, german, or belgian malts can be about ten more dollars a bag.
Its not uncommon to pay 50 dollars US for German pils, or marris otter.

Wow, where are you guys getting sub-£20 sacks from? Is it buying sacks in bulk between a few people?

A few of us 'up north' group together to get malt from Fawcett's. 10 sack minimum order, collected from Castleford. MO is about £17 a sack!
