treacle question

Post by Rookie » Sat Sep 14, 2013 5:39 pm

I have an old ale recipe that calls for treacle. I'm not sure how difficult it will be to get. What would be a reasonable sub?
I'm just here for the beer.

A Dave Line recipe by any chance? You can still get it. Most supermarkets sell in in tins. It's not expensive, but you will have a lot leftover.

He appears to be in the US, in which case you'll need to go to an English food shop or similar and I imagine pay through the nose for it. Molasses is sort of similar but tastes quite different

It's possibly a sub for dark brewers syrup which you can make yourself, have a look on the unholymess.com website to get proper instructions on how to make it. This won't taste like treacle but it's lovely stuff

That's what I was afraid of. When I do get around to brewing it it'll depend on how much change I find in the sofa cushions.

A quick google I found this response but it may be out of date

Black treacle is sold in Fresh and Easy (a Tesco store in the U.S.) or try Cost Plus World Market.

+1, I've also seen Tate & Lyle's Golden Syrup at Cost Plus World Market. By the way, you know how they let you mix your own six pack from all the craft and import beers? The Summit Meridian Session Ale available right now is really, really good.

Cool. I don't know if there is one of those here in Vancouver, but there are at least two across the river in Portland.

You should compare the price in the shops (if you find it) to what you can do on Amazon

I did find it on Amazon, so I know what price range to look for at World Market. Although if I have to go to Portland I'll have to consider cost of gas or bus fare, both being around $5.
