Evening all.
Has anyone got any experience of using crystal wheat?
I have a recipe with Pale malt, 5.5% Special B and 4.5% crystal and am thinking of using cyrstal wheat instead of 60L crystal malt. Does anyone think there would be a noticeable difference in outcomes?
Cheers!
Jim

Re: Crystal Wheat
It's my understanding that crystal wheat is less sweet than a regular crystal of the same lovibond number. With the Special B in there it may get lost.jimp2003 wrote:Evening all.

Next month I am going to brew an IPA with pale ale malt and 4-5% crystal wheat.

Cheers Rookie.
I was thinking the same about the Special B hiding the crystal but as it had been in my stocks for a while I went with it anyway - it's on the boil now.
It would be interesting to hear how you get on with the IPA.

Re: Crystal Wheat
I used it, but ages ago. I used 10% in a wheat ale which was one of my best brews. I think it's less rounded than regular crystal, perhaps drier. I was starting out on my brewing, too, so I wasn't the best judge. Definitely try it, though; it's petty safe.

I was happy with it. I turned one gallon of it into a black IPA. I entered both into a comp and scored 34.3 on the IPA and 40.3 on the blackened part.jimp2003 wrote:Cheers Rookie.
