loughran family malt

Anyone heard or used this malt before. Seems quite cheap at 90p per kilo or 18 quid for 25kg
could be cheap enough to have to play around with maybe

I'm Irish but not used it yet, nor seen any reviews of it, sorry.
I think it officially launched at the Alltech gig in Dublin at the weekend.

Yea I've never heard of it just nosing around a site and saw how much maris otter was going for thought there's gotta be cheaper

Propino is the variety, I don't know much more about it other than that.

They say that Propino is the most widely grown malting barley for the brewing industry, but I've never heard of it or seen it mentioned on beer bottles. I tried downloading the malt spec but got a Know Your Customer form for LPG!

Yeh I got that gas form, on any specy-thing I clicked on. Dunno what's up. But can't be good for business.

But I have had castle maltings before which there was a pic on the page. Which took me nowhere.
but also i can't recall where I got them from. But I did not think anything bad about the grain, just as good as the last I had.

i used it in an arrogant bastard clone. my efficiency was rubbish using this malt.. the beer turned out very nice though.
ive enough left to make another batch so ill probably brew up a bitter at the weekend with it and see how it goes.

I've got 2 sacks of it. One is free to anyone that wants it (there's ~16-18Kg left in it)

The first brew I did with it had problems. Mash wouldn't clear and result was a very poor efficiency. I complained to the supplier and they sent me a 2nd sack. Brewed with the 2nd one and got a bit better efficiency but still down from what I normally get with Crisps.

Tried again with 1st one and got a stuck mash, gave up.

I will not be buying another sack of it.

made a bramling cross smash with the malt i had from my order . i had a 75% efficiency with it. put the brew into a corny today and the sample was very nice. seems for the price this malts fine.

Yea the price has come down further since I last posted this. But as this is gonna be my first brew I'm now scared to use something that others have had problems with.

(Posted this on another forum, reposting here for the sake of anyone considering buying this malt)

Brewed with this myself over the weekend, the following recipe:

4kg Loughran Pale Malt
125g Porridge Oats

20g Magnum 14.4% AA @ 75 mins
13g Goldings @ 10 mins
27g Flyer @ 10 mins
40g Flyer @ Flame out

Did a cereal mash with the Oats and some pale malt then the main mash was left for two hours starting at 67C. Ended up with 22 litres in the Fermenter at 1.043 - I'd estimate around 3 litres of loss to trub, hop absorbtion and dead space.

All in all not quite as good efficiency as I was getting with Bairds Lager malt but not too far away - price difference certainly will make up for it.

Problem is 5 kg is 4 quid so 10 kg will be around 8 quid. On the the home brew company's website I can get 10 kg of marris otter for 10.79

So I'm still struggling as it's my first brew weather to go tried n tested ( cost more and I'm gonna be fine tuning) or cheap cheap (this is my first ag brew so lots to go wrong but should I take one less variable out)

Well, it's £15.99 for 25kg - not bad. The only bugger with Get 'Er Brewed is they don't stock any "proper" Maris Otter, just the Barids Maris Otter "Blend".
