Maris Otter is widely acknowledged right across the brewing world as The Finest Brewing Malt in the World.
The fact that it is still grown must mean it has something going for it. For me, English Ale and Maris Otter go hand in hand but I can't speak for Aussie beer.
IIRC they use two varieties, Sloop and Schooner (or at least Coopers do)

And there is some good Aussie beer (remembers Stone & Woods Pacific Ale and Little Creatures Big DIPA as particular highpoint of a beery holiday)

Couldn't agree more SamT! Aussie craft brewing is alive and kicking. I love Stone & Wood and Little creatures and Three Sheets by Sydney's Nelson Brewery is a beauty too - Galaxy and Nelson Sauvin with a generous slice of munich malt. This is a brew I'm trying to recreate at the moment!! Coopers sparkling ale is a great traditional brew and the much maligned Fat Yak is a lot better than most of the smoothflow crap they serve up in most pubs in this country nowadays.

They do drink there fare share of crap though (tooheys XXXX etc), but the Aussies don't drink Fosters, they don't even brew it over there. I think they make it in Manchester or is that Heineken?

As for MO it's an old favourite - some maltsters are better than others (I'll never use muntons again) but I'm open to new ideas. Just got my first sack of crisp malt. I'm looking forward to trying it out at the weekend.
