The Cost of Pearl at LHBS

Post by landy813 » Thu Jan 17, 2008 11:24 pm

My LHBS is now charging £38 for 25kg of crushed pearl.

Does that sound a reasonable price?

Does crushed grain keep as that amount would see me right for about 8 months?

Cheers

It's a tad high. There are some cheaper deals but everywhere has been affected by the barley price increases and when you consider the postage to ship some you might not consider looking further. My LHBS is doing sacks for £42.50

Barley bottom does marris otter for £29.50, there is the £8 postage to consider but why not gets some cheap hops at the same time?

8 months is fine in my books, just keep it cool and sealed with the air squished out. Some people will probably disagree.

Cheers for the reply's I think mail order is the way to go, as I have been to another HBS and they wanted £59 for 25kg of pale malt.

When my sheds free off land rover I'll have space to store sacks of grain.

landy, if you're prepared to be cheeky ring up your nearest micro brewery and ask if they will sell to homebrewers you'll not go far wrong. I did and found that they actually supply a few of us, i've been getting 25kg of Fawcetts MO for £17.50 for most of 2007, the gaffer then upped the price to £20 (I think just for the hassle factor) and they say that it'll be £22.50 IIRC for the first half of 2008. I get all my grain and hops and finings from them now and also get the opportunity to have a good nosey around and ask questions when i'm there. The head brewer at my local micro is a sound guy and has been willing to help out with supplies as long as I give him 2 days notice.

What does 'floor malted' mean?

You can get floor malted MO at Tuckers - I took a drive down there on Tuesday (got relatives in Newton Abbot) so combined a quick family visit with the grain run. £23.50 for 25kg of floor malted grain is a bargain in my eyes. Only £5 UK delivery if you can't collect. And, as for the beer shop, it's like an aladdin's cave.

I'm going back to do the tour later in the year. Even SWMBO has taken an interest and has agreed to come along.

Also got a beer festival at the maltings in April with over 250 real ales...

I ordered a 25 kg sack of whole British Munich Malt from them cost £21+£5 postage. Delivery took two days...sweet. I know all the arguments for supporting your LHBS but I'm not paying double for a sack of malt. Besides, the UK HBS have had a fair bit of money out of me this year. Hundreds of pounds.

Your lucky you have a choice

I only have one HBS that sells crushed grain in all of NZ. And they are on the other island :(

This time last year my local micro was selling me malt for £12.50 a bag.
In December he was upset that he now had to charge me £15.

I'm breaking him in gently before I start talking about yeast and hops.
