Morello cherries for Cherry Stout

Post by the_great_okapi » Wed Oct 01, 2008 2:17 pm

I am hoping to make a cherry stout in the next few brews, and I am stumped as to where I can get a decent supply of (not too expensive) Morello cherries to add to the secondary FV.

I know I can get the Puree from thedrinkshop.com but it is rather pricey at £9 a kilo. I estimate I will need 2-3 kilos, so this would cost more than the rest of the beer ingredients put together.

I am sure one of you has brewed with cherries before, so where did you get your pureed/frozen cherries from?

Chris-x1 is correct you can get them in most supermarkets
Sure I got them from Sainsburys or Tescos when I got them last time.
Fermenter(s): Lambic, Wheat beer, Amrillo/Cascade Beer
Cornys: Hobgoblin clone, Four Shades Stout, Wheat Beer, Amarillo/Cascade Ale, Apple Wine, Cider, Damson Wine, Ginger Beer

Yes, I found them in a Co-op tinned in syrup, I was hoping somebody might have spotted somewhere selling them frozen or pureed. The sourness of the Morellos has to be there and unfortunately half of those cans are not cherries, they are water and sugar, so judging the quantity will be a bit tough.

Since the post I found out that ASDA do them frozen for about £6 a kilo and I can get dark cherries for £4 a kilo from Sainsbury's, a 50:50 combination of the two looks like my best bet. It is an experiment anyhow!

Ta for giving it a think.

Not morello but there is theses I have used in a Kriek http://www.brouwland.com/en/ and they are in water
Might work out cheaper.

I got a cherry tree for my birthday this year, so hopefully i will not need to buy any next year.
The same reason I have loads of rasberrys now for the rasberry wheat beer next year

Good Luck

I got a caterer my wife knows to get me some from her grocer or somewhere. I'll be paying ~£5/kilo for frozen Morellos, so that "ASDA price" doesn't seem too far off the going rate to me.

I'm chucking 4kgs into a Kriek next weekend when i rack it into the secondary. Not a cheap beer style to replicate!
Drinking: Double IPA (Mr President Clone)
Drinking: London Porter (5%)
Drinking: Belgian Dubbel (8%)
Conditioning: West Coast Red (5.6%)
Conditioning: Nelson & Friends Series No.1 (Mosaic)
FV: A few spiders
Planning: Everything else!

4kgs? Sounds more like a wine than a beer!

I think ASDA is the best option, until the £ gets back up there with the Euro, then Brouwland becomes a good option.

I'd like to make a kriek at some point but I have to brew a good lambic first before chucking £18 of cherries in. Or any lambic, come to that. Good luck to both of you!

Too true, Krieks are not cheap

The last one I did cost me £1 a pint
But its all relative when its £3.00 for a 300ml bottle of it in a pub

To the kriek makers - did you make a lambic first and add cherries, or is there a shortcut?

The receipe came from one of the camara European Beer books i can post the recipe if you like.
** Found it *** http://jimsbeerkit.co.uk/forum/viewtopi ... highlight=

It was a base beer and then I added the cherries from brouwland
It took about six months for it to blend, but tasted very nice after that
Like I said not cheap at £1 a pint but I will be making it again

Next time it will be a full lambic version, as I see brouwland are now doing the full lambic wyeast yeast. Very tempted but its not cheap, but its worth it if it works out
