I'm looking at making a DL Amazing Mild but don't have any Roasted Barley for it. I have Black malt and wondered if that might make a reasonable substitute, I thought they were similarly kilned to 1200-1500EBC, and the descriptions I've read say that both 'has been roasted as far as possible to make the darkest of grains' or words to that effect.
What difference at 5% of this 1.035 grain bill do you think there would be in flavour between the two?
Thanks
Black & Roasted Barley
Re: Black & Roasted Barley
If black malt is all you have, go with it, but the mild won't have the richer, nuttier flavour that roast barley would impart, even at 5% of the grain bill.
Just came down from the grain store after having a sniff of each just to make sure

Re: Black & Roasted Barley
Doesn't black malt give a bit of bitterness?

I think they are both different, but i don't see why they cant be interchangeable in a mild
