Pearl Barley

Could I used plain old pearl barley from sainsburys, roast it in the oven, then use as roasted barley for a stout recipe?
Works out at 76p per KG - gotta beat the credit crunch somehow :D

I had the same idea with porridge oats (for head retention) & made 2 brews. In total i had just under 100 pints which wern't the best. After 4 pints my stomach would be on fire & there was always a slight acidic after taste.
Just from that ive decided to bite the bullet & pay that little bit extra as i know that im gonna be getting the right thing from the HBS.
Although im tempted to get some popping corn & crush it in the blender to see if its better than flaked maize. But i have to keep telling myself 'it might not be worth it'.

Thanks MA, I'll get some roasted barley, from the HBS, don't want to wreck a brew for the sake of a few pence #-o
