Malt Extract from Holland and Barrett

Post by Glenn » Mon Nov 30, 2009 8:24 pm

My local Holland and barrett shop sell malt extract in 1LB (450g)jars for £1.89. Is this malt extract any good to use instead of sugar. Two jars is 900g x 0.8 = 720g and make the other 280g with sugar. It may be a little more expensive this way as 1Kg of brewing sugar is about £2. But that is brewing sugar not malt extract and my homebrew shop is a 30mile round trip. Has anyone used this extract and how ?
Please note that sometimes they have a 2 for 1 Sale. I wish my homebrew shop could do that .
Happy Brewing.

I have used it and it's OK, you will get a better beer using it than using sugar, I am doing an extract brew with it tomorrow, the last one I did turned out pretty good.

i don't think the holland and barrett malt extract will be as good as using malt extract from a home brew shop. The reason for this is the quality of the malt which goes into it. brewing malt is the highest grade of malt whereas food grade malt comes in lower.

Ok but Holland and Barrett malt must be better than using brewing sugar. If you had to use one or the other which would you go for, and dont forget my home brew shop is 15 miles away. If I had dry spray malt I would use that, then H&B malt, then brewing sugar , but NEVER EVER normal sugar. Happy Brewing
