Hi all
a few days ago i downloaded the trial for beersmith, until now ive been using GW'S Beer Engine but seeing all the shiny extras on beersmith im quite tempted to splash out a tenner and get it...
...but...
putting the details of my grains into Beer Engine was nice and easy, i went onto the warminster maltings site, found the malt spec sheet and the details i needed ( to put into the grain editor and away i went! however its a bit more complicated in beersmith, in the add grain section the only category i recognize and i can get the relevant info for is the EBC. All the fields in the Yield and Properties sections are alien to me and i cant find the information for my warminster grains.
how do the people who use beersmith go about putting their grain info in?
Thanks for any help you can give me!

Re: Putting grain details into beersmith
on the menu on the left click Grains. Double click the item you'd like to tweak and fanny's your aunt.
Or the website has add-ins for specific maltsters. Search around there as well.

Re: Putting grain details into beersmith
Thanks but i know how to edit the properties and add new grains, i just dont know how to get the relevant information for the grains im using. its so easy on beerengine i only need to add a couple of properties (colour and extract LDK) but beersmith asks for loads of info, none of which is supplied by the maltster im using. the grain extensions on the beersmith website are brilliant... if you live in america and use those maltsters.
is there some way of converting the infomation i have so i can put it into beersmith?? i have the extract amounts, 'dry' and 'as is'.

On the bottom right of this page: http://www.beersmith.com/support.htm you will find extensions for specific malts.

Assuming beersmith requires points/1b/us gallon, simply divide the extract by 8.35 to give points. 300dkl = 35.9 = 1.0359 or 1.036. Coarse grind, dry basis, is usual.
Turncoat.

thats exactly what i was after! thanks!Graham wrote:Assuming beersmith requires points/1b/us gallon, simply divide the extract by 8.35 to give points. 300dkl = 35.9 = 1.0359 or 1.036. Coarse grind, dry basis, is usual.
Dont worry, ive had a play around with it now and i cant see anything that makes beersmith worth the extra hard work, it seems over complicated for me. beerengine is much simpler to use but as far as i can see offers no less than beersmith, and gives me spot on results so i think im gonna put that £10 back in my wallet and save it for some hops instead. While I've learned some tricks and shortcuts with Beersmith, I like the theory behind Beer Engine (and the fact that the creator is resident) and have only laziness to blame for not using more often.
